I only have two slabs one ngc and one pcgs. all the rest are raw but I do not have very many high value coins. I guess if I had more coin of high value then I might have more. I do prefer Anacs though since they do not have a joining fee or make you summit throght someone you may not know very well. But anacs has not special joining fee.

Of the three TPGs, I only have one coin in my collection graded by one of them , so happens to be a pommie penny bought from a yankee seller....lol

"Entombing" your coins is still not a big thing yet downunder....far too expensive to have it done by our TPGs here.

As of today, I have around 250 +/- slabs. 90% of them are PCGS, and the others are NGC, ICG and ANACS. Many times, I have broken coins out from other slabs and "crossed" them to PCGS holders.

Why? All things being equal, I know that IF I had to sell or liquidate my collection, I KNOW that I will obtain higher prices for my coins slabbed in the top TPG's like PCGS. Even after my purchase price, submission costs, S&H, etc., I have many times made out with these cross-over submissions.

After all, if you were to buy a coin sight-unseen (like ebay) and the seller stated he had a 1909-S VDB in "x" condition, would you trust him? I wouldn't. But all things being equal, if the seller had it slabbed/certified with a TPG like PCGS, buyers would feel more confident in bidding/buying your coin...hence higher prices realized. Take a raw coin to a dealer (not all of them, but many, none the less). You really think the coin is a MS65. The dealer may think it is a MS63, maybe 64 tops. Now you have a problem.

Of course, if that same dealer is selling the coin, he may sell it at a 65 and you think it is a 63.

Look, we are all temporary custodians of our coins. 99% of them will out live us and I want to make sure my collection is protected, perserved, authenticated (especially for keys and high MS grades) and as "liquid" as possible.

When I am buying, I don't mind adding $20 to the cost of a coin if it is slabbed with a top TPG. I figure for $20 over and above the bid price, it is the peace of mind knowing what I am getting/buying. When I submit, I submit coins in my raw collection that are worth at least $100 or more.

I would say that about 60% of my collection is raw (like my beloved Lincolns in Intecept Shield 2x2's before 1945) with the other 40% (250 +/-) are slabbed, protected, authenticated and set up for quick presentation and sale.

With that, I even have a letter in my safe stating, "So you found my coin collection...now here's what you SHOULD do!"

Zakgold, The market most certainly currently bears out what you say. I think PCGS is under some serious scrutiny these days. Most dealers that I know will tell you a slabbed coin grade is as subjective as a raw coin with the exception of authentication. If a dealer feels a coin is overgraded in a slab,no matter who the TPG is, they will only pay what they think it is worth. Hence the old adage, buy the coin , not he slab. Mike

My entire collection is raw, except for my 1909-S VDB and 1916-D Merc. Both of those are in ANACS slabs.

100% Raw !!

Although !!!!

I have recently been considering have a few of them entombed !!

Mostly due to the visit by James from Anacs.

but partly so that if anything should happen to me,My wife would not have to guess or ask whats what on the few coins I would have slabbed.

I work in a fairly high risk job, where at times I look down and wonder !!! What would happen if this doesn't work out?

I buy them raw and send them to ANACS because I like the protection of the slab. So far, my grades have agreed with theirs, so I guess you'd say that mine are graded by me and ANACS.

Most raw! I invest in rolls of coins just the way they came from the mint. The problem is they also come in bags they, are put and, sold as rolls. If you find a good dealer you know they are fresh. Most coins will grade ms62 to 64. This is a way for dealers to sell coins that have not been cleaned, Yet still demand a premium.
Also, If a coin is graded it will sometimes cost more for the same coin out of your pocket, although the holder is to protect it.
18 dollars a coin is High these days for grading services to slab your coins. In conclusion Some coins could sell for the same price as a slabbed coin. Therefore you make a profit selling raw, and if you are buying you get a good deal because, the holder will keep it from damage., the holder is free.
