From my perspective, it pains me that coins are being melted at ALL. But for the love of everything, if you are going to do it, at least check all of the coins first.

Just because it contained silver - does not mean it was legit. Lots of fake 1921 5-cent coins out there made in China, you can even order them in silver (Mike Marshall had a few examples of key dates struck in silver - however the markers are still there).

You're probably right, either we miss saw or it was a silver fake. Thanks for the info.

Quote: I'm just wondering who is dumb enough to actually melt down coins? It's still fully illegal to do so, yet people admit to doing it all the time.

Don't believe a word the OP wrote. It's all fiction.

Mark me as doubtful as well . Sort of like the time in 1962 when I spent the 1921 Canada 50 cents in the Liquor store Only realized it in my drunken stupour ! Oh , I was 8 at the time.

It's mainly dumb because they're worth far more as coins than as a blob of impure silver. If you melt silver coins you're throwing money away and destroying history at the same time.

I have to agree. The main reason why I hoard 95% copper cents is to save them from being melted. I doubt I will ever directly profit from them.

OP you have truly remarkable eyesight. I would never be able to note the tiny date on a 5 cent silver as it's tumbling into the melting pot.
