I agree this coin is AU. I have it at AU55. almost no wear on the cheek. the balls on the crown are very sharp. the higher leaves are well struck with solid veins. typically weak strike for this series. decent price

No way AU with only half of reverse column lines showing and weak back of hair - c'mon. Not even EF.

XF40, heavily clashed with a very weak strike (as usual for the coin and date.) Hair above ear and brow is flat, hair lines and lines in "III" are very weak and flat in places.
To make AU in my opinion I'd need a sharper strike with some evidence of luster and less wear visible on the high points as described above.

I Agree this coin is not AU . Too much wear both sides , also last leather of LIBERTY virtually not visible. Which according to most purists should be all letters readable for at least VF-25 . Nice coin but Just not AU .

for those who think this coin is not AU please explain how the columns wear down but not the high points of the leaves when the columns are set lower on the die

Lots of strike weakness in the columns which isn't related to wear. Still fairly good appearance on the parts that were struck well. Lack of luster and overall look keeps me at XF 45, but I was torn between that and AU 50

AU-50 with typical strike weakness in spots. Fully struck coins are out there but weakness like this is very common.

This came in. Looks AU to me in hand as expected. Beautiful obverse sharpness and strike. Weak in reverse center left as is typical for this first year minting of the white nickel alloy.   |
