There may be something there in the denticals under the 8, but I'd still like to see a better image.

And there might be some other digits in the denticles too. The 7 would be pretty distinctive.

Condor - my old printer/scanner is crowding up on 5 years old, and it doesn't scan so well, but I've posted as good a scan as I can of the denticle area. Hope this helps. Ralph

KurtS - as I stated in my original post - there is a small line in the dark area between the denticles just below the 7. I'm assuming this is the top of the 7. Sorry for the poor quality of the scans, but that's the best I can get.

Ralph: MPD= MisPlaced Date. In this instance in the reeding, to everyone who can't see it:
Look directly under the 8 near the bottom of the reeds.

Ralph, yes--I thought I saw something there as well, but I understand it's tough to capture these details on a scanner.

Guys, thanks for the information. You guys that handle lots of coins probably see this quite often, but it's a first for me. I found it on a coin that I have in my hand! :) I'm not concerned about resale value (I collect for just me..the pleasure I get from it) but I am curious as to whether this is something that happened alot back in the day when everything was done by hand.

Ralph: You may want to contact Coin World, Collector's Clearing House, to see if they want to show it. I don't remember seeing an MPD (mis-placed date) on a 20 cent piece before.

CherryPickers Guide lists a mispunched digit in denticles below 8. However, it has a notation that there is no premium because the MPD is actually more common that a normal coin.

Well.....so much for being scarce, huh? Still, it's a nice find, don't you think? Ralph

Definitely a good eye Ralph I am not sure I would have noticed that as an MPD is not something I would normally look for- now I need to check my own 20 center

Quote: I am curious as to whether this is something that happened alot back in the day when everything was done by hand. It's prevalent for the period, especially on IHCs. One IHC from 1870 has as many as 4 sets of digits in the denticles--I included an image of this variety below. Since it's hard to imagine intentional date placement would be that far off, the theory is these impressions were to test die softness during the hubbing process. a multiple MPD: image source: Eagle Eye Rare Coins

Funny thing about how I came to see it - someone suggested that it may be a mite off center due to the difference in thickness of the rim. While it does show a slight difference in hand, it's not significant - just a trick of my old scanner. I turned it upside down and scanned it that way just to see if it was different, saved it to my computer, and enlarged it for a better view...that's when I noticed the MPD. Went looking for something that wasn't there, and found something that was. Trip, huh?
