I am not one for buying dummies books. I am curious what the members of this forum consider their favorite books? I know a lot of poeple "read and roll hunt" when not actively seeking a particular coin, so what do you read?

For collectors of U.S. coins there are 2 excellent books available for under $20:

1. A Guide Book of United States Type Coins (The Official Red Book) by Q. David Bowers.

2. Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection by PCGS.

Both contain a wealth of information and are excellent for general reading and reference.

yotie- A great book for Morgan silver dollars is: A Guide Book of Morgan silver dollars (Official Red Book) by Q. David Bowers. You can find it on Amazon.com for less than $20. I would consider it a must have resource if your even thinking aout getting into Morgans. Good luck with your collection and if I or anybody else on this forum can help I'm sure they would jump at the chance.

To those who recommend Q. David Bowers' A guide book of Morgan silver dollars: Don't you think that that book, which I have, is a bit overwhelming for a beginner?

Can't go wrong with all the books listed above. Once you've read them, esp the " Red Book" and decided want "YOU" want to collect...then there are many good books on certain coins or certain areas. Remember "The joy is in the journey". Collect what makes you happy. And Welcome!!

Don't forget a good book on coin grading.

Check Whitman Publishing's web site.
