Very nice! From the pics I might have thought it was a satin finish. I don't own any satin finish proofs. Do you know of where we could find a good pic of one?  |

Type 2 means "Brilliant" proof when refering to 1936 Lincoln's. Type 1 were the "Satin" proofs. Edited by BH1964

Yes, 1936 was the first year for resuming the production of Lincoln proofs (since 1916). Only 5569 proofs were produced and only in proof sets. Most of the proof sets, I believe, were never broken up, thus, it's EXTREMELY difficult to obtain any single proofs from this year. I've been looking for two years now and I can't find one....at least the one at the right price/condition. Nelrak is one of the lucky 5569 people in the WORLD now. HEHEHEHEHEHE Tangent - IMO, the 1936-1942 Lincoln proof series is one of the toughest and most under-valued series in coins. Just look at the mintages and consider most of the sets are probably still together: YEAR MINTAGE CDN PRICE PR63 1936 5569 $125.00 1937 9320 $50.00 1938 14734 $40.00 1939 13520 $35.00 1940 15872 $24.00 1941 21100 $20.00 1942 32600 $21.00 The CDN values are just plain stupid. After collecting these for quite some time I can tell you the CDN prices are pipe-dream. The entire Lincoln proof series is also under-valued! Nice coin, and very interesting. I see that the Buff. Nickel also was made in brilliant and satin, but not so with the other coins. Was this a switch from one type to the other during the year for these two coins? Was the difference between satin and brilliant on purpose, or is it merely breaking out the cameo distinction out into more levels?

Thanks everyone. I have never seen one myself so I had to move on it. Like Thad said, most of these sets were not broken up, so it is somewhat of a rarity to find one. The next cent on my list is a 1909 Matte Proof in PR65.

This isn't correct. The proofs from 1936 to 1942 were NOT issued as sets but as individual coins. If you wanted a set you could order one of each coin, but if you wanted say just a cent and nickel you could order just those. The mintages you normally see posted for proof sets are those of the lowest mintage coin for that date. 1936 proof mintages cent 5,569 nickel 4,420 dime 4,130 quarter 3,837 half 3,901 figure for proof set in RedBook 3,837 |
