Agree, VF/EF details, harshly cleaned. You don't need the gloves for that one.

Coinfrog- "Harshly cleaned" doesn't mean that it's germ-free

Thanks for the input guys! It's a type 2 reverse so I'll probably just get it slabbed anyway for the variety.

I agree cleaned, but I think EF, maybe even AU details.

Spending good money to get this slabbed makes no sense to me.

I have been looking at buying a higher grade Trade dollar and see so many that have been cleaned. Just wondering why this dollar variety seems to suffer from being cleaned so often. Any ideas?

Regarding cleaning in general was there a period in history when it was common to "clean your pocket change" or is the assumption that most cleaning was done by collectors or dealers to enhance the coins appearance.

Thanks

Many classic coins have been cleaned for different reasons, ignorance and deceit at the top of the list. Best to avoid owning them under almost any circumstances.

Based on what I see here, this would grade in EF45 Range and possibly AU.
If sending in expect a "details cleaned"
Here is an ebay link that compares and contrast to the one you have here.
It's a 1878 S but may be helpful for grading purposes. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1878-S-U-S...047675.l2557

IMHO, both have similarities with yours having
a tad bit more robust detail.
Not as flat on the high spots especially on the reverse with above average eagle representation.
Is it worth grading?....Yes..Why Not!
Many collectors can't afford MS coins but some collectors would love to have this this coin to complete or add to their Trade dollar collection. Thank God there's all type of collectors in the coin collecting world. Also, coins like this if bought right (discretion of pricing) may put profit to work on other type coins of interest (upgrades etc!..)
Whatever you do is strictly your pocket book and not someone else.
If you happen to have it graded would you come back and post it here?
Sure would like to know how the TPG looks at this coin.
Appreciate you sharing the coin with us and I'm excited for you to hopefully get a reasonable grade.

Thank you villagekid! Appreciate this comment a lot. I don't know near as much as everyone on here so I try to be as humble as I can when posting topics. And I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment! I think this would look nice in a slab and have something nice to pass on or gift to someone.

As far as the grade is concerned, I'm going to wait until Japan opens up airmail to the states again, so there's no telling when that might be.
