Quote: Just checked a few prices on the Charmy Harker website. Her prices are high retail. "High Retail"? More like sky high retail. Let's take the 1899 IHC MS64 RB for example. Greysheet retail says the price should be about $128. PCGS is at $135. But the coin with those attributes is for sale on her website for $225. A 75% markup!!

You have to understand , guides don't sell coins . Right now quality coins are bringing top money , just the way it is ! If you want a really nice no issues coin , you are going to have to pay up or wait to see if the market changes . I am a dealer , right now , for a fresh collection , I would pay silly money knowing that the market is exceptionally strong for Nice material . I would be in line with a hundred others unfortunately!

@PacificCoin
You think it is 1985-1986 all over again? When WallStreet was bidding up coins into the stratosphere, only to have the entire market crash by the of that decade?

Keep in mind that for a coin to be graded RB, the "Red" portion has to be at least 5%, but less than 95%. RB Coins with a lot more red in them WILL sell for more than those with much less red. The Greysheet treats coins like commodities, as if every coin in a particular grade is equal and identical. But "The Market" recognizes differences in eye appeal, and like it or not, "The Market" will pay more for coins with nicer eye appeal. "The Market" is the boss!

@Winesteven,
so basically you are saying I am irrational by adhering to Greysheet prices?

Quote: so basically you are saying I am irrational by adhering to Greysheet prices? No, I am not saying that. What I'm suggesting is that in today's market it is difficult to regularly find the coins in a particular grade that have among the nicer eye appeal for that grade at Greysheet prices.

I guess patience is a virtue. I guess I simply have to wait for something to come along that I like and is in my price range.

@ numised , Comparing the current market to the Wall Street hype of the mid 80s , nope even worse ...... more people with way more access to knowledge with way more time and money on their hands . Heck the individual who just paid stupid money for the Brasher Doubloon ........ first coin they ever bought !! People are prepared to buy Quality and are more than ready to pay for it !! Good luck in buying a nice IHC at wholesale Sheet .

Might give Charmy or any of the specialized dealers a call. My couple of interactions with her has been friendly and positive, even though I didn't ultimately buy. I know her listed pricing can be strong, but she has some really nice inventory, knows her stuff, and has been doing this for a while. She knows what premium pieces can get in today's market. What I have heard on Rick Snow is also very positive.
No damage in reaching out to them to explore what options they might have that could fit your budget. Maybe they have stock that isn't top-dollar eye candy for the website "under the table", and you'll score a solid piece anyways. Doesn't hurt to ask, just maybe awkward!
Plus, talking with the experts and learning from them is a win in and of itself!
Another option is to scrutinize the MS63 population for an undergraded or CAC piece. Remember that you are buying the coin and not the label. Use this to your advantage and cherry-pick a good deal that's due an upgrade!

If you use the price guides as a "guide", you will often miss out on quality coins that are priced or bid above the guides. Lately, items have gone for over the guides at auction and on various coin dealer sites. EERC sells on ebay and on his own site. You will get better prices on his site as you and he avoid the ebay fees.

@txgolfer56, I hear what you are saying. And in all fairness, the eye appeal of an IHC can be all over the place, irrespectively of the grade. An MS65 specimen might have one carbon spot and go for book value, whereas a MS63 might be blemish free and go for 20% markup. Not to mention that the color can be all over the place from brown, red-brown, to red, orange, and everything in between. I guess that makes finding and choosing an IHC so difficult, more so than say silver coins.
