I used to feel a little bad about dumping $1000 worth of dud halves a week at my dump bank, but last time I was there, I saw another customer who was dumping probably 4x what I was (obviously another hunter), so now I know I am not the most hated customer!

My teller was telling me that there was another coin collector doing the same thing as me. Now I'm worried I'm going to pick up his duds.

So you guys don't roll the coins back up, you just give back all the coins as is?

SJUHawks, I saw a "CoinStar" once at a supermarket a couple years back, I havent seen one since. I read they use the free coin counters in some banks in Ontario, I'm in the west.

I've also learned that you can get gift cards from Coinstar, and there's no vig if you do that. Great way to beat the system.

I prefer TD Bank's Penny Arcade, though. I happen to be a customer, but you don't need to be one. Good deal!

I never thought of the coinstar fee as the vig, but I will now. Lol, that is exactly what it is...

I guess I always thought of vig as a gambling/bookie term even though it isn't exclusive...

I don't have a 'dump bank' just because I can't get out to the banks often and I just go to the nearest one. However, when I go I just ask for an exchange: my cents for theirs. If they give me strange looks I say honestly, I'm a coin collector and I've looked through these ones already.

Good luck in your searches!

You have to have a dump bank because otherwise you might get some of your searched coins back next time.

Luckily, I live two blocks from a shopping center where there is a Bank of Montreal, a Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, a Royal Bank (with *very* friendly staff), and a Credit Union. I buy at the three banks and dump at the Credit Union, which requires that I place my name and phone number on the rolls when trading them in.

One bank that I have an account with has a 'free for members'
coin counting machine. Dump the coins in, get a reciept,
take it to the teller, get your cash.

This is my dump bank for that reason. However I feel really
warm and fuzzy about dumping at this bank because they are
collector unfriendly, at least to me, so I feel like they
have earned my dumps.

I think the best reason to only dump at one bank is to isolate
you from getting the same coins over and over. At least as
much as possible. You don't eat where you dump... so to speak.

We have coinstars in my area. How do the gift cards work?

Between my wife and I we have accounts at four different banks. One bank I specifically opened an account there because they have a no fee coin counting machine.

I've been searching rolls pretty heavily for about 3 years. In that time I've found a few branches of a few banks that are not too customer service oriented. These are the banks I love to dump on.

These tellers hate me and I know it. I don't care, I don't feel bad. I am a customer there and I only use their services to drop off coins. If they don't want customers doing that, they'll change their rules/fees/requirements.

Today I went to my local bank and asked for 2 boxes of Quarters; the teller didn't look too happy about my request. This teller was asking a bunch of questions and it seemed like she really wanted me to give up. She told me that the Bank in this particular location doesn't carry too many coins, so I asked her if she could order some boxes for me. After she spoke to the manager, she told me that the coins will be in on Wednesday at 1pm and If I don't come in to pick up the coins, there will be a service charge of $25. I agreed to the service charge if I don't show up... This is my NEW dump bank, I figure I'm doing them a favor since they obviously have a shortage of coins. I really don't feel bad for inconveniencing banks anymore, these guys have been dinging me for years with their service charges. Plus, I'm creating work for employees, they should be happy to help roll hunters.
