This is a Sri Lankan ancient coin. I know it is not the same but does it have a similarity in style?

DL20K- true. And it seems to be larger. SO our mystery coin may be a larger denomination.

Xshift, The coin is not mine I just googled it as I remember seeing similar sri lankan ancient coin before. Maybe from here we can find out what really is this coin, if it is a coin. I bet incredible SAP can be of big help here.

I bet you're right.. hopefully he'll wake up soon

I saw some similarity on some ancient japanese coins (been perusing lots of ancients looking for ANYthing close to this) - lots of wavy lines, etc. They also use an 'x' as 10, but not quite so square as on this thing.

I haven't responded to this thread previously, because I frankly have no idea what to make of it. But the more I've looked at it, the more I'm agreeing with Archraz's original hypothesis:

Quote:
I think that is just a really, really bad attempt at a reproduction cob 8 reales or escudo coin...

Here's a pic of the coin, in my best guess of the correct orientation, compared to a "perfect" Potosi-mint 8 reales cob of the 1700's:

Flat,-Stone-Like-Thing..-|-Really-Odd-Repro-Spanish-Cob

You can particularly see the lower half of the lion, in the top right quadrant of the cross. I suspect the original coin it was copied off had a great deal of the design missing, and the crude line-drawing of most of the design was an attempt to mimic the missing design elements.

Pic of Potosi cob snitched from CoinArchives.

Definitely a possibility... especially when you put them side-by-side like that.

manilagalleontrade, they were pics of the original coin, only much larger to hopefully provide greater detail. (I've resized http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...-0008sm2.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...-0009sm2.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...-0010sm2.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...-0011sm2.jpg , but it looks moot now )

This has to be the most bizarre attempt at a forgery I've seen yet.. just with the size of the thing! At least they had a sense of humor and put the wise old owl on it.. (accidental or not, that's pretty funny)

Like what I told you only incredible SAP can solve this.

The cross, the pillars, the lions and the waves all coinside. Maybe, it was copied from a very ugly, overused 8 reales.
