I'm looking forward to seeing my first NV 25c in hand. I fed a meter an hour ago with both a WV and an OR and they were both so pretty I felt a twinge of regret feeding them. NV seems to have at least hit a triple with their design-one of my favorite "mental images" of NV was of waking up in the car at dawn ( in June 92) just N of Ely NV, because the driver had to stop for mustangs crossing the road.

Be thankful that we live in a country where not all of the coins have the face of a queen or king on them.

Although European (and other nation's) coinage have kings and queens on the obverses, I love what most of them do with the reverses. Some of the prettiest coins I've seen are Australian and Canadian - lots of animals and variety on the reverses.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Nevada, all over the state. Here is what I think of when I think of Nevada:

The train is great and anything to do with mining or the CC mint would have been attractive but I absolutely can't stand the state outlines on our coins. If I wanted outlines I could just buy a map so I see no purpose what so ever to add very boring outlines to distract from a potential outstanding, award winning design. Looking back at our quarter series I can't help but wonder who in the world was in charge of Michigan's hideous design. Those folks up there don't live in the Great Lakes and there is NOT a doubt in my mind SOMETHING would have better served the people of that great state than a bunch of squiggly lines. At least they didn't sell their quarter to a private business and sporting facility to use as an official souvenier or business promotion. Only Indiana could pull that one off!!!

My Dad is a retired geologist. He spent a lot of time in Nevada and I went with him sometimes. The Great Basin topography is unique in the world and a place of great interest to geologists. The terrain shown on the design I did is real USGS digital elevation data.

Here is the explanation from my web site:

Nevada's unique Great Basin topography symbolizes the state's geologic importance. The famous Virginia & Truckee locomotive #18 (the "Dayton") served Nevada during the great gold & silver mining boom, and is reminiscent of the Silver State's "Wild, Wild West". The Dayton is on permanent display at the Nevada state railroad museum in Carson City.

The coin image is patterned after coins once minted from Nevada gold and silver at the Carson City mint. It shows the state capitol's famous "CC" mint mark. The legends were changed to show the official Nevada state mottoes "All For Our Country" and "Battle Born".

The pair of aces is representative of the state's gaming industry. The ace of diamonds symbolizes the glamour of Las Vegas, and the ace of hearts symbolizes the romance of Nevada.

The small square on the map shows the location of the mysterious and legendary "Area 51".

You know dgoose, until just recently I would have agreed with you on this statement, but now I'm not sure I could say this and mean it. All of a sudden, I have been looking at a large display of very beautiful and artistic coins from the so called 'dark side' and believe me when I tell you, some day you just got to take at least a peek.

Oh by the way, watch it for a couple of dark siders around this forum, as they will do everything within their power to turn you head. Be allert at all times.
Rest in Peace

I saw this Daniel Carr design several months ago, and loved it.

While the actual Nevada State Quarter is attractive, I feel this Carr design would have been one of the best State Quarter designs, if not the very best.

Thanks Daniel, I should have researched more.
State outlines are not liked so much but the terrain topography idea is great.

Welcome dgoose50 to our little haven on the internet. While some folks may frown upon a king or queen there are others who are absolutely fed up with DEAD Presidents! After a lifetime of having presidents shoved down our throats many American collectors have and are turning to world coins to add some variety to their collections and lo and behold they have found not only beautiful designs, with eye appeal, they have also discovered something WE currently don't have in the U.S. and that would be LOW mintages on many coins throughout the world. Seeing how our hobby is literally based on supply and demand you can guess whos coins are rising in value the fastest? The United States Mint does EVERYTHING in its power to control the secondary market while other nations are doing just the opposite by enhancing the secondary market with low mintages. This quarantees the mint of a quick sellout and the quicker the better. Many foreign (Darkside) coins, if you are fortunate to get them at initial release, bring huge increases within weeks of that release. Others may take a year but I can almost guarantee you the difference between, lets say Canada and Australia compared to the U.S. coins is like night and day! Don't get me wrong as I collect most U.S. offerings and always will but after taking a long hard look at some of the history, culture and pride some of the other countries of the world is striking I found that I was not only making wise decisions concerning the future of my hobby but was also learning a tremendous amount of history that I was never taught in school! (Which was a long long time ago). Thanks to the Euro release in 2002 I found a whole new world of coins and have had a rebirth of coin collecting like I have never experienced in my life!

Old Dan are there really DARKSIDERS lurking here? Imagine that!

dgoose50 you are not ignorant to anything? One who seeks answers can only be looked upon as a wise man! I have always said there are no stupid questions only stupid people who don't ask questions!
Until the internet arrived many of us did not have a clue about foreign coins so join the crowd and take the time to have a look. Lots to learn and enjoy, as many Americans are finally finding out, and the opportunities are vast! Plenty of fine folks right here on this forum to help you out!
