Sap, is it possible that they struck different medals for each country with the same obverses but with the insignias of each country's forces on the reverses?

An exonumia dealer I buy from sometimes believes it's a tribute medal rather than a challenge medal.

OldDan you asked what a challenge medal was. As I understand it they originally were used by troops in the bars. Someone, from say 1st Cav Division, in a bar would issue a challenge for all 1st Cav troops to produce their challenge coin. Anyone from 1st Cav who could not produce one had to buy everyone a drink. And if everyone had their medal with them then the challenger had to buy everyone else a drink.

This is why it might not be a challenge medal because it's not specific to a single unit. But that doesn't matter to me. It's still a beauty!

He didn't say who produced it. I'll bring to work with me tonight and see if I can get out of the capsule. Maybe there will be something on the edge.

For OldDan: A challenge coin is usually held among a group of people (each one has their own) and when everybody 'belly's up to the bar" the one who can't produce his/her challenge coin has to buy a round. The military is famous for these coins and they usually reflect the brach of service or particular group (Sea-Bees, etc)

I also received a wonderful coin (pocket piece) and patch from OldDan today! The pocket piece coin has the State of Wyoming seal and the motto "equal rights" on it representitive of the State's motto "The Equality State". The patch (suitable for sewing onto a shirt or jacket!) has a Buffalo and the state seal on it. Thanks a lot OD!
I will be in Wyoming in June for a few days and will PM you with dates, locations and such. Perhaps I can stop by and say hey! Mike

I'm glad you liked them Mike, and the patch can be worn on your left upper arm sleeve and no one will question your entry into the state. In fact, the Highway Patrol may even give you an escort across the state if you need one.

As far as June goes it should be clear as of this writting. My son has some plans for this spring and I'm not sure when that will be happening.
So let me know and we will see if something can be worked out. I might even take you out and introduce you to old Bill. He should be in fine shape by that time of the year. He's kind of mange right now.

What a great medal and an even greater gesture.

They must breed them well in Wyoming.

I managed to get the capsule open last night before running out of finger nails. Even the edge is beautiful. Unfortunately, there's nothing there about who made it.

Think nothing of it! It's small enough thanks for the nice items received from you and Mike in the way of dark side coins.

I kind of thought that Buffalo might just ring a bell! Enjoy!!!

Thats a very interesting piece you got there. from the looks of the pic thats definitely an eye catcher. Just wondering though. What kind of metal is it made of? I have a coin that looks to be of the same composition but I'm not to sure about many metal types besides silver lol.

It's probably bronze and then they "antique" it. Sometimes they might add a coat of lacquer to them. There's not that much difference between brass and bronze, it just a matter of some tin added to copper and zinc to get bronze. If they don't add the tin to it's just brass.
