It actually weighs 3.11 and if it was a damaged coin prior to strike why are numbers and letters not damaged?

I did a quick look at your photos and noted the scratch scars run right over the memorial and Lincoln's head. The head and memorial are struck at the same time as the letters and numbers.

This indicates that the marks got there after striking to me.

Yet the rims and outer devices are totally unaffected? Even the mintmark appears intact. Quite curious to me. Perhaps this is a defective planchet, many of which I have seen here without degraded value and considered somewhat unusual.
Let's see what the resident metalurgisit Silvosi weighs in with. Such planchet anomalies have been exhibited here previously. I briefly hesitate to throw my hat in the PMD camp without some further explanation even though I am in no means an expert in these matters.
Seems to me PMD would have also affected the outer devices and rims to some extent.

to the CCF It is weird that the scratches are on the field and devices, and not the letters around the edge. We may need closer and in focus pics to see if the scratches go over the letters. At first it looked to me like lead or solder, but I can't explain why the letters weren't effected.

Looks like someone took a wire brush to it then put it back in circulation. If it circulated for another 20 years I'm sure that would have worn down most of the scratches off the high points of the designs & devices.

I would agree if it would have worn down the letters and portrait evenly, but Lincoln and the memorial still have scratches on them.

I was just looking for some insight into what might have caused this. The coin is smooth to touch cannot feel the scratches at all if this helps any
