Word is that Charles III will appear on coins starting sometime in 2023..Designs have to be approved by him personally. As far as banknotes go, there are no immediate plans until it is decided that new designs / security features are warranted. That could be 2023 - 2025...

The coronation is likely to be late spring/early summer - the history of allowing for parade and pageant with the monarchy means that the weather would need to be nice, but that could really mean anytime from the end of April until the end of August (less fancy - for more distant royals - events seem to come in September). Due to his age and his requests for a smaller ceremony, it will be less flamboyant for a coronation, which also means earlier is possible. His mourning time is likely to need to be less than that of his mother after losing her father simply due to her age - a sad loss, but not unexpected given her 96 years. After that, it really depends what has been prepped before.

One thing is for sure, he'll be facing 'left' on the obverse.

I think the head will have a crown. Important to display the authority with a new monarch.

The BRM has released their approved portrait of King Charles. They will be releasing 3 tribute to QE II coins next week with the Kings portrait. I would guess the RCM will use the same or very similar portrait. @wallyb- no crown.

It will happen at least as late as 2023. There could be Elizabeth coins struck in early 2023 if it's not ready. Anyways, it's a long time.

Yes, no crown which is unfortunate. The profile is only slightly less flattering than the one posted by SPP.

May 6, 2023 sounds like the day Charles gets crowned.

Yes, no crown which is unfortunate.

Historically, a royal portrait was released in both crowned and uncrowned forms, allowing the colonies and dominions to choose which style they preferred. George V was uncrowned in Britain, crowned pretty much everywhere else; George VI was mostly uncrowned, except for a few of the smaller colonies; likewise, Elizabeth II's first (Gillick) portrait. The second (Machin) portrait of Elizabeth II was the first time the Mint issued just one option, adopted everywhere.

That's the date they've announced, yes. Given how quickly The Royal Mint released the portrait, we should certainly have Australian coins issued with his portrait by then. Probably by January 1, if not even earlier.

I wonder if they will continue making 2022 dated coins with QEII into 2023 to cover circulation needs and account for people saving the last year of her reign's coins until they can gear up for a 2023 release with Charles III. Since he was King as soon as the Queen died, I don't think they need to wait for a Coronation ceremony to start the coining process.

I wonder if other places like Canada, Australia, etc will have the first 2023 coins being the queen for a limited run then go right on to King Charles III in the latter half of the year like how the Britannia's are doing?

I am fairly certain that neither Canada nor Australia will mint 2023-dated circulation coins with the effigy of QEII. RAM and RCM will mint 2022-dated QEII coins into 2023 -- if necessary.
I am also fairly certain we will see CIII circulation coins rather sooner than later. Technology has advanced and CIII has already approved an effigy for the UK.

That said, will the other realm countries feature the same portrait of the King as the chosen UK design? In the past I have noticed a bit different effigy's on the coins in the realm.

The King could reign a very long time and still never approach the number of coins out there with his moms effigy.
