Well, to see if it's at least gold, balance it on the tip of your finger and tap it with another coin. If it rings for a long time, then it's not steel (at least)
You can do that tapping with any coin (quarter will be fine) and you can also tap a quarter this way and compare the two sounds.

Something seems rather dull in the sound of it being tapped. I also tapped a 50 dollar gold coin and it sounded nothing like it. The size is so small it is hard to get a good balance on it and tap..(novice) I will continue to try and find out more. Who would know for sure or how do I go about finding out if it is a fake or copy? WOW THEY SURE DO A GOOD JOB OF IT! thanks,

Welcome.
I am NOT an expert, and my eyes are not great.
That said, I think your coin is a fake. Sorry.
The 5 and 8 in the date are way off, too close together. The arrows are too thin with too much separation.
I hope I'm wrong. I wouldn't be the first time.

Thanks Frank, I am beginning to think so too. It's not a big deal, we inherited coins from our brother and this coin was not separate and in a special area. it was in a bag of random coins. he knew his stuff for almost 60 years of collecting. so he probably put it there for a reason.( And I thought I found the Holy Grail! ha ha kidding). nothing ventured nothing gained. I have a feeling it's a fake now too. even the way the color is worn. but I can't hurt to try. thank you for you help.

Hi And Welcome,
I am afraid that the coin is a counterfeit.
It does have the wrong reverse type for the year.
It is not a mismatched die situation as the coin appears fake to begin with.
Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill, Yes,I figured it was a fake after all the great answers I got from the nice people here ... I guess if I had no suspicions I would have felt comfortable and not gone crazy looking for some help on it but something about it made me wonder.(actually the gold seems a little worn color-wise almost as if it is darker under a thin layer of gold maybe?) I have to say it is actually very much more real looking in person and as I did not know about the arrows and the date being a bit far apart etc..I am really kind of impressed that anyone did that good a job on (counterfeiting) a coin. well I learned a few more things on my quest to learn and know that the coins I am only selling real coins that my brother left us. I should have known, this was in a bunch of rather messy looking coins and he was way to knowledgeable and honest to have been fooled by it..that is why it was with other "junk". Thanks to you all for your welcome and you help! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions about other coins. So far I have done a pretty good job and have only really nice feedback so I guess I'm doing pretty good so far... Thank once again and enjoy your evening.

Well, that's how counterfeiters are. They try to make it as real as possible, but still are just dumb enough to leave a detail behind. Also, I noticed the difference because I was using this: http://www.amazon.com/Official-Red-...11786&sr=8-1It gives you pictures of the coin, mintage years, mintages, prices and tips on grading. It' a pretty useful resource. And let's see... 1 coin down. Any more?

Hi,
It is important to note that there are fake gold pieces out there of all denominations that are amazingly deceptive. As seen in recent numismatic publications there are a huge number of counterfeit coins being produced and many are pretty good.
We hope that you come on in and ask a lot of questions:-)
Have Fun, Bill

Just chiming in. Interesting coin and topic. First thing that I read which I was a little concerned about was tapping a gold coin (not knowing if it was indeed a fake) or for that matter any coin with any possible value, with another coin. Even a light tap on lets say gold or silver, can easily mark it etc. Also I was wondering if the coin was measured and weighed and then checked with the actual specs. of that particular date genuine coin. I know it is possible to forge a coin and get the weight pretty close but with most fakes I beleive the weight is a pretty good giveaway. Maybe a simple specific gravity test. The concensus here is that the coin is indeed a fake. I am no expert on fake coins but lets say the coin turned out to be gold with the correct specs. etc. There may be a possibility of a die variety. ? Yes, I know most will say, well there is nothing listed for that date eagle so none exist. Not wanting to kick a possible dead horse but ?

WoW! so much help! Thanks. Coin weight is about about 2.5 to 3 grams, on a kind of cheap, Jewelers Security Products, scale. As the real one would weigh 4.18 grams it looks worse and worse.. Rest assure I did not tap it hard at all as I did consider the damage and I new he did not mean I should hammer it.
Let me just say, my luck does not run along the line of: Find the lucky, amazing, valuable coin in the bunch. I just thought it was worth a try. I found the right place to ask for sure as you have all been so nice. Yes, there are more coins and I will be asking questions so expect more Dumb sounding questions from me....:) don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about these "pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves, and Morgans from heaven" but it is no easy task getting to know your stuff, even a little bit! So yes I'll be back, says THE COIN TERMINATOR, in the mean time I am not tossing this coin but I'll put it back in the safe so at a later date someone else can worry about it..ha ha good luck to them. In the mean time I'll try another few coins..any suggestions :) Morgans anyone? Thanks to all of you again for your time. G p.s. when I ask about another type of coin or bill do I have to go to another area of this site? or can I ask about any coin / bill right here? BOY, I'm a real handful of trouble, SORRY.

Although it is counterfeit, It can still potentially be an underweight piece that still used gold as the metal. Don't give up on it completely. You need to see if it is still gold.
