Glad to hear from you. I did some trawling and found a mine of information from Austrokiwi from about 10 years ago. Just bought a 1760 one myself. Lovely old coin.

Neat coins! There's so much focus on the 1780 restrikes that the originating pre-1780 type feels obscure in comparison.
The first 1760 coin looks like the same(ish) type as the restrikes (with some differences in the arms apparently), the second one is a different (Hungarian-themed) reverse - can't recall having seen one of those before!

I suppose this one also counts as a MTT, albeit a kronenthaler minted in Brussles

Nice coins. I think a side-by-side comparison of the 1760 and 1780 busts would show quite a difference, too. As for the kronenthaler ... nah ... we want our MTTs to have a bust of her majesty

Cool! I particularly like the one with the countermark. (Spellchecker kept trying to write Medusa! Perish the thought!) That variety is known as a"Presentation type" cos it's Mary and the infant Jesus on the reverse. The whole range of the Thaler gets me because there's something like 150 varieties altogether. Nearly all of my little collection are dated 1780 but I live in hope...

Just had another look at jgenn's pic. Nice! Same date as mine. Detail differences in shield on reverse (possibly a different mint - there were several), and mine has armour on her shoulder rather than drapes, similar to the Guenzberg strikes from 1765. I'll try and put some pics up later.

Quote: we want our MTTs to have a bust of her majesty Agreed - a Maria Theresia thaler should have Maria Theresia on it, otherwise it is not an MTT! My 1765 MTT has a different bust, otherwise quite similar to the 1760 version: For comparison with the 1780 restrikes, here is an early one, struck 1781-1788 (Günzburg mint). Again, updated bust, and a different coat of arms: The restrikes continue until today, here is one from around 2018 (Vienna mint):

Hope these pics are ok. Thought I'd renamed them... They're of my 1760 Vienna Thaler...

The blurred ones were taken with my tablet. Little Lenovo thing but the camera obviously isn't up to much. The most recent two were taken on my iPhone and as you can see, even though the images have a similar number of pixels the second lot are far better... It's a learning curve... Coffee now I think...

Wow! Very ornate! One story has Maria Theresia actually signing government documents while in labour. Did you know that her youngest daughter was Marie Antoinette? Maria T had apparently warned her not to be frivolous...
