Looking at PCGS photograde, the obverse appears to be better than Poor-1. Looks closer to AG-3 or at least Fair-2. I can't see anything on the reverse from pics provided. Also unknown if if it is a lettered edge variety. Considering it is in an ANACS holder, should reduce the value some. Here is a link to the PCGS site. If you scroll down the page you can see what a Poor-1 example is valued at and what they actually sold for. Good luck with your quest and keep us updated. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...bars-bn/1347

Would $1,200 or a little more sound ok?

Show him the PCGS page that shows the value at $1050 and then negotiate down because it is in a ANACS holder. I think that offering $1000 is fair but then again, it's not my money!

Well he said $1,400 that's why I said $1,200 but I'm not sure if he will take that.

Please do not pay $1,200 for this. Please. You seem to have a death fixation on this issue. Take a week off and catch your breath.

Looks pretty good to me. Nice bust, which says it all. Try and whittle it down.

I think I'm going to take a break buying coins, I'm putting to much attention to coins I think I need a break.

Good call. Have patience. The seller will likely have to drop the price eventually and you don't need the purchase as much as he may need the sale. Keep checking Heritage and Great Collections. Perhaps something better will come your way. Best of luck!

I remember when you could buy these for under $500 all day long.
The market has changed a lot...
From my point of view, if I had enough money to buy coins at this price range on a regular basis, I'd save my money for a few months and then buy the nicest, most close to problem-free AG or Good example I could obtain. At least enough to where the reverse and obverse detail are clear enough to identify - I mean, it's supposed to be a type coin (at least it would be for me) so I'd want to be able to see both sides.

Dodged a bullet here.

Ditto to all! Step back awhile, Matt, and consider how you want your collection to be, to look, say ten years from now. IMHO, accumulating coins is easy, a no-brainer. Seriously collecting them involves thought and planning.

This is excellent advice you are all giving here!
It's hard not to pull the trigger whenever I have available money to spend. As a result, I have lots of low or mid grade coins or problem coins. I've been really trying to step back recently and wait on the "right" coin to hit the market. Collecting is a ultra marathon, not a sprint. It's really difficult for me to not get excited and make purchases, but I think having discipline and restraint will serve me better long term in having a collection I'm happy with.

No one of us ever has the best coin.
I still have both of my 1858-S half eagles. One of them is an ugly ground find, the other is VF cleaned. I like them both simply because they are 1858-S half eagles. There are better ones that cost ten times as much but I'm not interested in owning them. They belong in someone else's collection.
You own the best coin you can afford.
