"Other than the words "One Nation"
How does this relate to Abe Lincolns preservation of the United States Of America?"
Better than saying, "Two nations, north and south" Surely the US is one nation because of Lincoln!

As I learned in APUSH, Lincoln did not fight the Civil War to free the slaves, but to preserve the Union.

I like the one on the left in the link provided. How do they decide on a design? What process do they go through?

I think what they do is, they go around asking all the coin collecters what the think, they discard the ones they like, then they put the rest before a senate committee which works out their own interests and find the guy from their own state, and then they choose the design from the guy nearest to the state of the senator who is willing to sell his votes on other things, to have this designer.
Either that or they put all the designs in a hat and then pick one out at random.

Do you get the feeling that the congress building will be on the coin? Do ya? Only HALF of them, and it seems a little silly, as the congress building is already on one of the them this year (okay, almost all of the congress building, bar the bit that wasn't finished)!

Can they bring back old designs? If they could, they would probably be making big bucks on collectable 2010 Morgan dollars.

That's a nice reverse you showed us, thanks jbuck! I personally favor a 'shield' theme because the shield was depicted on almost all of the circulation coins minted during Lincoln's presidency.

Frankly I think the design recommended by the commission on fine arts looks like a "Turkey Tail" and as far as being artistic, it's not ballanced out properly. I was hoping for something like LP-13 the Shield of the Union, which would certainly become a classic design in future years. Instead we get turkey tails. One thingthat I've come to depend upon, is no asthetically pleasing designs being produced by the U.S. Mint in the modern era. I'm actually a bit surprised by the positive response this "recommended" design has gotten here on the board. ~ Jim
