all the spots on the reverse are indicative that the coin was either cleaned prior or something was splashed on the coin to affect the surfaces. AU details (Cleaned)

Definitely cleaned in the past, with AU Details, may straight grade but I wouldn't purchase it as choice. Not bad if the price is right.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
The spotting on the reverse reminds me of the 1817 CBH that I posted sometime ago where acetone removed something that looked to have been splashed on the surface at some point and once removed left behind un-toned shiny spots on the surface.

Normally I do a thorough search of sold listings across multiple sites when interested in a particular coin, can't believe I didn't see this previously.

and now for the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey use to say, or maybe not. - May 27 - sold in NGC AU details holder for $491, then returned to the ebay dealer Larry Lucree (aka ryman1003 on ebay) - July 4th - now cracked out and sold to me for $701. 2nd bidder was clearly a dealer with 24k feedback and over the last 30 days placed 5.5k bids on 3k items - July 29th - bought again for $515, this time by the same dealer with the exact same stats that bid me up on July 4th. - August 17th - found the same coin listed as BU++ by none other than Great Southern Coin - August 19th - sold by GSC for an eye watering sum of $2,525! For that price and a little patience, I'm sure I could find a NGC/PCGS CAC MS 1812. Had I not found the AU details holder, I might have kept it. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for a relisting in the next month or two.

That's quite some detective skills. What an interesting journey for that coin.
