With all those cracks in such a small area what are the odds this is a shattered die .

I'm with John1 with it being a pre-cud.
Congrats.

Well the die was heading for a CUDation, but I would call what you point as a large die chip or maybe a small RIDB at that stage.

John 1 thanks for the link on shattered dies with that information I would agree not a shattered die don't see that an area has fallen lower than the original surface.

Thank you John! I'm trying to learn which is the difference between Pre-Cud and Retained Cud, but for some reason my brain doesn't take it , because whether I see a Pre-Cud or Retained Cud all I can see is a rim to rim die crack

Thank you I6609, Petespockets55,igwt79, Dearborn, JC Stevens and coin rejector!!

Thank you all for all the input, I will be sending this to Cuds on coins soon, I will update after a get an answer

If that piece broke off that would make one heck of a Cud!

Marve65 I wish it had been a big Die Cud

I searched for 1988 pre Pre-Cud in google and you have to see what I found, the the coin has a Cud is in the same place as this Pre-Cud is, but the Cud was more large
