No, that is above normal. In 1999 and 2000 some quarters were struck on experimental planchets and weigh between 5.9 to 6.3 grams. Part of the beauty of this coin is how well struck it is which is unusual on State Quarters from my experience.

This coin just looks like mild environmental toning. More importantly it would need a metal composition analysis to determine
if it's an experimental alloy blank or not... ya never know. (though, Virginia was not on the list of the state coins struck)

That was my first thought too, but Yeah Seeker may be right. hopefully you may have a cool experimental State Quarter here.

Exactly Tacc!! Could be expensive to find out you have a coin worth 25¢. But then if is an experimental planchet its money well spent. This site gives a few other visual indicator's. If none are there, I would call it normal.

If you are going to post articles then make sure you read through them first.
It states: "A small number of experimental planchet State Quarters are known for each of the five 1999 states: Delaware, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Jersey."
And in 2000: " The 2000-P Massachusetts Statehood Quarter was struck on a 100 grain planchet of an unknown alloy composition."

And being experimental there was no mention of these quarters being released into circulation.
There was no mention of the Virginia quarters being struck on experimental planchets.

@Marve: I did read through it and it was posted to show what what an experimental planchet was. The 2nd article I posted shows that some made it into circulation and not all planchets were the same composition. Nothing exists until it does and it generally only does when some sends to a TPG.

Hello, there was a 2000 Virginia Gold set, but it's a little more deeper in gold. I believe I have a quarter with the same toning and I believe it came from a coin holder book. It most definitely happens to my quarters in the blue books. But you never know, I hope you hit gold tbh. Best regards DyKil93

Here our some examples of this type of toning from the chemicals in Quarter book holder, or mint set envelopes and plastic set holders. A variety of depth and how deep it might go. A few of these are from the same set. I could not find my Quarter that looks like that, only an ugly quarter. I'll see if I can find it. Cheers, and happy hunting everyone.
