Well, it looks like it already had been cleaned at one point, but I can't tell for sure. Is there luster on the coin? I wouldn't call the toning artificial if it is a result of sitting in a brown envelope for 30 years. Think carefully about this decision because you CAN"T undo it. I agree, just sell it and put it towards a much more attractive AU specimen.

I know it will sound like blasphemy, but it is your coin, do what you want with it. Just don't fool yourself into thinking you will be increasing the coin's value. You will be lowering it without question.

STOP! Put the container down and slowly back away! Now, put your hands behind your head and interlock your fingers. You have the right to remain silent.... Seriously, you should be arrested if you clean a 1928 Peace dollar. Also, if the toning is caused by 30 years exposure to an envelope it's not considered artificial. I would suggesting sending it in to one of the top four graders, get it certified and put it on ebay. Or there's a sell your coin section here. Use that money to pick one up with eye appeal that you like.

Don't dip a valuable coin like that. If it was strictly a bullion piece then I wouldn't hesitate but not a key date.

I agree with the idea to sell this one as is, and then buy the one you want. There are not too many 1928 Peace dollars out there and to ruin the natural luster and cartwheel luster of the original minting is not what you want to do. The natural skin is only there once. Just my opinion. Obviously it is your coin.

I don't see a problem with how it looks. coins tone and oxidize over time. all that does it change the color, not the detail. you should put it up on ebay saying something like; EXTREMELY RARE MINT ERROR!! WRONG TYPE OF METAL USED!! ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND KNOWN TO EXIST FOLKS!! BIDDING STARTS AT A MERE 5,000 DOLLARS!! COIN WORTH OVER 50,000 DOLLARS!! This coin will never be offered again! After you sell it for way more than it is worth, buy 2 ms63 versions of the same coin and you can have the " Peace dollar PUPPET EXTRAVAGANZA"

I am usually the "it is your coin, do what makes you happy" guy, but please do not dip that coin. As others have said, sell it and find one you like. I say this because it is very easy to ruin a coin with dipping; it only has to be done for one or two seconds too long.

I've seen my share of AU+ 1928-P's that had much worse 'toning' than that nice coin of yours! Coin dealers will put any higher-grade 1928-P in the case, even if it sat in sulfur paste for decades and turned coal black.... I would be happy with it as it is!

Wise decision ! I was 'so' worried that in your next post, you would state that you have got it all cleaned up now, and are in the process of drilling a hole in it so you could wear it as a medallion (or a 'sign', so to speak).
