DNA- you are the only non mint employee who has admitted "seeing" a business strike 2009 D nickel.

I saw thousands of 2009-D Nickels pouring out of the Schuler press
into the ballistic pallet bag that day, from the hallway above.
(so did about 50 other people on the tour with me, but I may have
been the only one who knew the true rarity of what I was seeing!)

It just makes me sick that they were all trucked to the
Federal Reserve Branch ten blocks north of the Mint, and they're
still sitting in 'oblivion'...

Like I said, the Denver Mint is the only active U.S. Mint that you
can tour where 'classic' numismatic key date coins were minted in
the same building. (such as the 2009-D Nickel?! )

You can also visit the museums that were the New Orleans Mint
or the Carson City Mint (and in 2012, the old San Francisco Mint).

On the other side of the border, I live about 12 blocks from the mint in Winnipeg.

I finally had the chance to go and check it out this past summer. It was an interesting tour, but nothing I would base a trip around.

As far as tours of this type go, I found that given at the Guinness Brewery in Dublin infinitely more interesting...plus they give out free pints at the end.

You won't get anything like that at a mint.

I have been to the Philadelphia mint, but it was a long time ago. Nicely enough, I live about 45 minutes from the city, so it's an easy trip.

I have been to the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg several years ago and had the grand tour, but that's it.

If you go to the Denver mint, you can easily drive to Golden, Co. and tour Coors brewery. They used to give out free samples.

Now there is a great idea! My dad would love that. Because of our last name it is the only beer he will drink. He actually collects Coors bottles, can , promo stuff, anything Coors really.

In the past, you could sign up to take a floor tour of the Denver mint when you take an ANA summer seminar class. I've taked this tour it is very interesting. It's much better than the general public tour. The list of new classes and tours should be coming out soon.

coretj: Since you have an obvious interest in Nikola Tesla
(you proposed a $5 titanium coin with a Tesla theme in this thread):

As you probably know, Nikola Tesla had a laboratory in Colorado Springs
(one hour south of Denver).

Colorado Springs used to be home to the Tesla Museum Of Science
on Bijou Street, which closed down in 1999.
(I remember it quite fondly!)

Google "tesla museum of science colorado springs" and you will get
some information on the current whereabouts, and a number to call.

Question for SeriousCERES,

Since you recently visited the P Mint, I was wondering if you remember exactly what they have at the gift shop, I was going to purchase the silver quarter proof set and the LP3 & LP4 cents rolls, and a 2009 Mint Set.

Do you remember if they had any of the above items.

I was planning on visiting that place at the end of January, and will hold off on ordering online if these are available online.

Saying I have an interest in Tesla, is a bit of an understatement
My Male dog's name is Nikola
My Female dog's name is Tessa
I tell people I was born on July 10th (only 4 days off real birthday)
I have every denomination of paper currency with Tesla's likeness on it... Including the 10 billion dinar note in perfect condition. Not worth all that much but still very cool.

Tesla's lab was at the intersection of Foote St. and Kiowa St.
(in downtown Colorado Springs)

There is a historical marker one block south, in Memorial Park.

You can (and should!) also visit the American Numismatic Association's Money Museum,
which is nearby.

I might add that one pair of my great-grandparents were living on a
farm just east of Colorado Springs when Tesla's lab was in operation.
They did see the building (exterior) in person, according to my
grandmother (their 7th child, of 8 children!). Grandma moved to
Denver in 1937, at the age of 21.

To RobertBidniuk:

Thanks for your question!

They definitely had the silver proof set and the clad proof set, as well as the mint set for 2009 on sale in the gift shop. If you're interested, you should also ask the person at the counter if they have rolls of territorial quarters still, they keep those in the back. (Those are rolls of coins that had been made available to the public in the machine I mentioned in my earlier post.)

As for the LP rolls, I hate to bear bad tidings but you'll not find any help at the Mint. They have no circulation cents whatsoever to offer there, so you'll want to order those from other sources (either the online Mint shop if they still have them or from dealers).

Best of luck,

SCS
