I actually stumbled onto this listing quite by accident. I was looking for a listing with a buy it now...in mixed lots so I could just press the "sell one like this" link. I popped up this listing and saw the dates...and didn't even have the heart to make a "best offer". I might have been able to get them for less, but I thought it was an awfully generous selling price already.

I'm betting this lot gets returned....looking at Heritage, the date on the 93-O is not right. 10 to 1 odds it's a fake.

one thing you could do is send them in for grading.

I also hope I am wrong, but I have looked at many Morgans I'm long life and there is something just a little off about these. Do you have a return privilige?

Sorry for the delay....ya caught me workin'. Yes, I have talked to the seller, and while he claims to have had these for a long time...which means nothing about authenticity, he will allow for a full refund. I told him of my misgivings, and he's not going to be a problem. They will be here tomorrow. I'll know much more when I get them in hand. A little work with the calipers and the digital scale....and I'll know in pretty short order.

I wouldn't read too much into the appearance of these coins. The image was prepared on a flatbed scanner, and I once bought 11 silver eagles for 7 dollars each from just such a picture...on a hunch. The scan looked just like this one does, but the coins looked nothing at all the way they appeared in the scan. They were nice BU coins.

I got the lot of coveted Morgans this morning....and they're on their way back to the seller. They weighed from 24.3 to 24.7 grams each. Too good to be true this time. I've notified the seller of the return.

I was afraid of that. He should refund your return postage as well. I bet he will try and sell them again.

Excuse the dumb question as I am no Morgan connoisseur, but what's the big deal with the weight? I would assume that some of the original weight would be lost with wear.

The seller has agreed to refund my postage. While he told me "I've had these for a long time"...he now says he'll have to try and get his money back from the guy he got them from. I guess "long is a relative term.

As for the weight....it takes a lot more wear than is evident on any of these coins for the weight to be that low.

The 1893, which was artificially worn to make it look like a circulated coin, still had remnants of a wire edge that would have been gone long before the coin was worn to that degree.

mdh, while a Morgan dollar would lose some weight from wear, for the coin to have lost all the way down to the 24-25g range it would be extremely worn, AG3 or probably lower.

I see........and I did not realize that there was much faking going on with these, but I suppose we will find it with anything as long as there is $$ to be made by the crooks.
