There were many US coins made of silver until 1964. Those coins since 1964 have a copper core(the edge you see is the core)then other metal alloys are laid on top of the core. These coins are called "clad" coins. Some of them are clad with silver alloys.

If you look at the edge of any post-1964 American "silver" coin (dime, quarter, half, or dollar) you'll see the same effect. American coins are almost unique in demonstrating this "layering" on the edge.

This is not a "Silver" Ike dollar......just a regular "Copper-Nickel clad" Ike dollar, of which there are many. It's not a "fake". These are common. There were many "silver" Ikes minted too, however.....but this isn't one them.
The Eisenhower dollar coin was minted from 1971-1978 ...and minted in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Fransisco.
Silver years are these:
1971 S
1972 S
1973 S
1974 S
1976 (Variety 2 & 1)

These (Copper-Nickel clad) are affordable in any grade.......$1.50-$2.00 in the lower grades...$5.00-$6.00 in MS grades.

If I never saw a U.S. coin before I would think it looked odd.
Never seen any foreign clad coins either. I never liked clading.
I bet it would be more cost efficient to drop the clad construction
and use the best alloy mix that would work. Would look a lot better also. Would make silver roll picking a lot more work though :)

I wonder why the 1990 S Prestige Set with the Eisenhower dollar never did well ? ...
Only 506,126 Minted.....but just not very popular or very valuable. In fact....issue price was $45.00.......Redbook '08 lists current value at only $28.00 ....
Shame.......

The 73 S and 74 S come as both silver or CuNi clad, the silver 1976 is also an S mint. The 76 S can come as either silver or CuNi clad, and the silver version ONLY comes as Variety 1.

A lot of collectors here consider the Ike (Eisenhower)Dollar to be an "ugly" coin, but I've never really considered them to be such.
Better grade Ikes are nice; many Ikes spent their circulation careers going through slot machines.

I have both a high end un-circulated set of proofs and MS grade coins in a Dansco album and a registry set that is fairly high end and I think the Ike dollar is a really beautiful coin. My Proof coins all PCGS PR69 Deep Cam and ranks tied for 27Th spot out of 401 sets and my Ike MS set is at 64Th out of 371 sets on the NGC registry board. The Ike dollar can really get expensive in the MS grades for the early P's and D's.
