I'd say the extra metal on top of the Cud would be part of the Cud, seems like it's an irregular break in the die, like it was fractured when the chip was lost, almost like a lamination error on the die.

A Cud is caused by a die break affecting the face and shank of a die. The weakness opposite the Cud is caused by less striking force between the two dies in that specific area due to the die breakage.
