Life is a long bumpy roller coaster ride. Parts of the ride can be scary. You can hold on tight out of fear or you can throw your hands in the air and enjoy the ride. Either way the ride continues and you'll be coming out of this dip and climbing the next hill. There will be more curves ahead. You are so much more than your job. You'll have less income for awhile but on the bright side you'll have more free time.

Sorry that this had to happen to you. But everything in life happens for a reason, and hopefully there's a good reason for this in your life.

I am sorry to hear that. Are they offering sny severance package ? I have been laid off before, It really stinks.Unfortunatley the bills keep coming in. The same day I was laid off I filed for unemployment. After my claim was filed. I IMMEDIATLEY started looking online and in the local paper. It took me less than 2 weeks. I worked it like a job. got up ate breakfast went on the computer, searched faxed resumes from home.Took a break and went back to "work". I had 5 interviews in the first week. I even found 1 job by cold calling , looking in the yellow pages to see what kind of companies would use me and I would call and ask for personnel, if they said no I ask if they knew anyone. I would "work" until about 4pm. The nice thing about the internet is thats its always "open" Here is a program I have used for years called Just the fax. Iy has a 30 day trial and to buy the program is only $20.00 It works very well. I composed and saved my resume on my desktop, I also made a "form letter" cover sheet and changed the info needed to suit the job I was applying for. Fax from your desktop http://www.rkssoftware.com/justthef...verview.htmlsites to search and post resumes' www.regionalhires.com www.hotjobs.com www.monster.com www.careerbuilder.com Good luck, get going ! you'll find something quick, stay positve and focused.

NDS, I'm so sorry to hear this. I have found, though, that things do happen for a reason. Perhaps there is a better job waiting for you. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

I really get the sense that we are living in a very scary time, financially and otherwise. We all hope, I'm sure, that better days are on the way.
I have been fortunate in that I have never just flat out lost a job. But, I certainly have known of many who have, and it sort of brings your world to a halt, at least temporarily.
Things do happen for a reason, and almost always things correct themseleves and improve.
So, sorry for the misfortune, and I'm sure things will change for the better, with a better situation coming up soon.

It might be best to remember what old Horce Greeley said a long time ago;"Go West young man, go West!". Especially if your willing to get down and dirty in the oil/gas patch. They are crying for people and cant lure them in fast enough to keep all the drilling rigs running. Don't have any idea how long it will last, but it sure pays big while it's going.

NDS, I've never lost a job by having a firm close down on top of me, but I've had a LOT of clients who defaulted on payments to me for one reason or another resulting in my having to lay off employees. In every state in which my company worked, we had to pay into the states' unemployment systems which, in turn are supposed to be supported by FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax Act) into which every employer (e.g., me as the business owner) is required to pay. If you haven't already done it, I recommend you go down to your local unemployment office and apply for benefits immediately. If, as is often the instance with financially struggling businesses such as your former employer's they have not been paying into the state UI program, FUTA is supposed to cover you anyway through the state.
There is little doubt in my mind that the US economy is in deep trouble, despite the rosy claims from the White House, and jobs are scare across most of the US. It is even more difficult for those of us "older" persons who, like you have just lost jobs, but also have medical conditions. In my instance, when I broke my back in a civilian accident thus taking me out of my trained profession (wildlife biologist) and, for the same injury, was kicked out of the Army Reserve thus losing another source of income, I was desolate and despaired of ever having a "real" job again, especially as I developed secondary medical problems. It took a couple years to swallow my pride and apply for Medicaid to cover immediate medical costs. Then, I was encouraged by the local Social Services people to apply for Social Security Disability which was easily granted. Meantime, I had applied for and was granted a VA disability which had been on hold while I was still in uniform.
I don't want to get too personal with you on a public forum, but depending on your age and medical condition, you may be eligible for a lot more benefits than you realize. After all, you've been paying for them in advance all your working life. All it took for me was for someone to point out the benefits to which I was entitled.
Good luck!
Fred

Old Dan I would love to go WEST but afraid to mention the fact to my wife and kids as I know they won't even consider the move. And, I am afraid she would help me pack if I agreed to go it alone!!!
