yes, it is a good one the cases are completely different. I'm going to put a photo together with a real case and the bad cases together.

If that's counterfeit then it's a good counterfeit.

I dion't remember where I read it, but there were about 100 PCGS fake slabs snt to China, or something to that effect. I wish I could be more specific, but that is all I recall. I do believe it was here on CCF. Dick

Verify through the sight that identifies fake PCGS slabs and compare it to your item. If you see something that is suspicious, contact PCGS and they will be more than happy to look at the slab for you.

It'll be interesting to hear the final word on this coin.
I, too, do not like the shape of the "O" in ONE (although in other examples there is a variance in the "O" this one is a radical variance) and I find the CC position and size suspect.

When do we find out whether this is real or not? What do you suggest for a beginning collector? Focus on graded coins or buy them just separate, ungraded.

The corners are easy to tell in hand but not so easy in photos. There is a better diagnostic for photos, and there are other very good diagnostics if you have the slab in hand. One of them would show up very well on photos but it is on a part of the slab that you never see in images. Quote: PS how do you become a valued member? Make more posts.

Ignore the slab for a minute and look at the coin. What about it screams "fake"? To me, this coin looks like a typical uncirculated Morgan. I have yet to see a confirmed fake with realistic appearing mint frost and bag scuffs and I bet if you did the tissue test, it would be nice and bright.

Here is some info on how to spot bogus PCGS slabs. It is a short article I published on a different Numismatic web site.
Here are some quick tips to detect fake PCGS slabs.
1) The fake slabs will not stack together properly. They will also not stack correctly with other genuine PCGS slabs. The stacking tabs located in the corners and along the side are shorter on the fake slabs.
2) The fake slabs are recognized by smaller size print in the label. (compare it with a measuring device against a genuine PCGS slab).
3) The hologram will not be as colorful as the genuine slab. It will lack the luster when tilted for observation.
