Yep - not a T-1. You can also tell by the bottom part of the robe near the right ankle. Look at a pic of a T-1 vs T-2 and you'll see the change they made in the die.

Yep definitely not a 1916. Definitely not a type 1 either. It looks like it has a mintmark, and if it is an 's', it may be a dateless 1923-s! You'll never know for sure, but we wouldn't be able to completely rule out the possibility, so you can pretend. :-)

Well then Johnny - I'm pretending to have a full roll of 23-S's. I have a whole roll of dateless S mintmarks I've held onto as I've gathered them from various lots & auctions. One of these days I'll stumble upon one.

This is probably a silly question and I'm sure I'm not the only one to have ever asked, but could the stuff they use on Buffalos to restore dates work on these? Or why not?

I'm still in primitive mode when it comes to SLQ's and all I knew was it wasn't Type-1 because of the stars. But, I recently bid on a few lots so I'll be posting pics and asking dumb questions real soon!

From what I hear, the stuff used on the buffalos just turns SLQs black. This is probably because silver is more acid resistant then copper?

I wonder how I could word that auction on ebay and how much I'd get. "Full roll (40) 1923-S Standing Liberty quarters - Potentially" LOL. Just a BIN at $500 or something. |

Just make sure to include a felt tip marker with the order, and tell the buyer that writing "1923" on each coin will help bring the date out. |

Nope, ferric nitrate(Nic-A-Date) only works on CuNi coins through a selective etching action. It is virtually impossible to restore a date on silver and the few methods that can be marginally used are not for someone without extensive safety training in handling dangerous chemicals(iodine, sulfuric acid, 30% H2O2, etc). |

Instead of implying that roll of S-mint SLQ's is vintage 1923, why not simply say they're all overdates? When the prospective bidders start asking questions, politely reply that each coin's metal flowed over the date. Such logic is far more honest than is normally ecountered in the bay,

Slap two type-1's, reverse side out in a roll and list it as a typo - "um-searched".

LOL - I'll probably just hold them. If I ever do decide to ebay them, I'll list them honestly, I have one of those conscience things that bugs me if I do something dishonest. Darn it. LOL. Good sleep is more important than a few bucks. |
