There are 2 possibilities here that I can think of may be more as long as it's legit.
1)Insufficient ink 2)Some sort of "obstruction" error.

zee, FYI - here are 2 examples of insufficient ink errors. My understanding is that this type of error is diff for each occurrence meaning no 2 will look the same. I have seen one in person where 1/3 of the note is missing the black ink (left side). http://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...ink-75961801http://bneelycoinrarities.com/image...r-L3767A.jpgIf the links do not work - Google "insufficient ink currency error' and look at some of the hits that show up. As per obstruction - Here it would have affected another part of the note. Keep in mind that this person is relaying 3rd hand info IF ANY of this is legit on the OP. Peace

FYI ? Evidently, your understanding is also that I just fell off of the turnip truck yesterday. The description (and I do understand that it is second hand description), of the note is not vague, nor is it that of an inking error.
Basic understandings of quadrant plate positioning, inking, embossing and intaglio would change your views of what is possible and what is not, when it comes to inking errors and just how many in a run will look the same.

I have to agree with zeewool, there is no way that this note could be caused by an obstruction or insufficient ink. The OP described the note as "perfect" with only the portrait missing. An inking error will never be that precise and the two notes that Ceylon posted show the randomness of inking errors. As described, the only possibility for this note is that it has been altered outside of the BEP and is not a legitimate error. It sounds like grandpa got a great deal selling it for $200 but the dealer will eventually take a loss on the thing or pass it off to another unsuspecting collector

Thanks Bio for highlighting the randomness of ink issues which is my point. In this case it would have had to be the perfect setup / circumstances to have hit it at the center. Ergo, it cannot be ruled out if any of this info is legit.
Zee, as it relates to FYI in messages. In my career when FYI is used the answer is "yes I am aware of it" / Yes I saw that / or thanks for the info and not intended as questioning someone's intelligence.
Bio - Take a look at my security thread post down below for a "perfect setup" scenario in case you have not seen it.
Peace

Quote: BTW, I haven't seen it myself at all. That statement in itself says a ton. This brings to mind -- I wonder what happened to the guy with the 1975 silver quarter? That one was verified in person by the forum founders with photographs.

My husband has a one dollar with no face. He got it in the late 80's when he lived in California. I have it sitting right in front of me. I am trying to send a pic but it won't upload.

How big is the picture file? If it is more that 100k, you will need to reduce the size.

I can't seem to get it small enough to upload it It is at 548kb? I don't do this every day so. I will keep trying, because I think people need to see this.

You can use a free program like Paint.net or Irfanview to rescale the file.

Not sure about that one, does anyone know where I can get more information on "Saddleback Bills"? they are larger in size than our current bills and I was trying to find some information on them and their value. Thanks for your help......

Saddlebacks are a new term to me. I think that you are referring to large size notes and some folks call them 'horse blankets'. Google large size notes, or better yet, check out 'large size notes' on ebay. There were far many more styles and designs of large size notes than there are of the notes of 1928 to present. Value will depend on exactly which note it is, the signatures on the note, and its condition. Post a picture of it, I am sure that the folks here can identify it and slap a value on it.
