Every time this topic comes up for either Silver, Gold, etc. I always remember a TV show, can't remember the name, but some guys stole Gold, went into frozen state for several hundred years, woke, faught over that stuff only to find Gold in the future was as common as Aluminum is today. Might sound far fetched but doesn't anyone wonder about the not so distant future of so called precious metals?

copper has so many uses and applications that it's price will always go up, lows are probably just hiccups caused by unforeseen interruption of supply

Nic, you're right, thats part of my thinking/pondering , I am also wondering what it will do to recycle prices - I'm not a copper investor by any means, I found the article on yahoo news, and thought it would be something worth talking about here

Actually the usage of Copper is fading away for many items used in the past. For example remember all those cords you used to have for your computer, phones, faxes, etc? All going wireless. Many organizations USED to use miles and miles of wire and cable for communciations. Those too are dwindling as Fiber Optics and wireless are replacing them. Ever look at the inside of an old TV, Radio, etc? Used to have massive wires made of Copper all over the place. Now a simple little board of chips. People used to use Copper for cooking but now replaced with Stainless Steel.
So just where is Copper's usage growing?

Carl - that's a good question. I have heard that a lot of the recycled copper in the US is going to China. Maybe they are still using it.

I don't know what the demand is. I do know that we've had a number of local news stories in the last few years outlining the theft of copper from construction sites and such. For a while, people were also stealing air conditioning units for the copper. Haven't heard much about that recently, though.

communications are getting away from copper, but there's always going to be uses for copper wire..
firearm ammunition will always use copper jackets along with brass shell casings, and developments over the past decade in weapons manufacture for military use also have included copper, crazy what they have come up with!

so sure, some instances or types of use might be waning, but new ideas are out there, and being put into use daily

Carl, good point--copper is chiefly a manufacturing metal.
In terms of being a bullion metal, it's simply too reactive for long-term storage and liquidity. (imo)

Hi Carl, electrical wiring and electronic applications are just one of the uses for copper, but these areas pale in comparison to copper used for coinage, perhaps the two links below may be of interest

a nice application for copper was the statue of Liberty at Ellis Island. It's made of copper

Yes. I remember that episode..

the soundtrack of twilight zone was best as a ring tone in the 2nd generation of cell phones..

Here's the link for that same TV episode, for a trip back in time, it's the 1st part of three parts

<<link removed by staff>>

btw sorry for veering off on the topic....
TZ was my favorite tv series, next to ST (star trek)..

For the Trivia minded, the Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island, not Ellis Island, but Ellis Island is technically part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

Don't they use alot of copper on the bottoms of ships? I heard copper chips was mixed in with the paint and used to keep barnicles from growing on the bottoms.

With firearms too the usage of Copper is fading. I've already used plastic cases for .38s. Teflon jaketing too is becoming more common. No lead bullets too are now used so Copper jacketing is fading. Many shell casings are now made with Nickel, plastics and even fiblers.
Not sure about the usage of Copper in other countries but here it is really fading. Imagine the many, many miles of Copper wire now replaced with Fiber Optics.

All true but so minimal compared to the massive usage of Copper that is no longer done. Remember the OLD PENNIES, all Copper? Like I said think about the MILES of Copper that USED to be used for the Telephone alone that is slowly fading away.
