Now see, why can't we here in the US have some nice looking coins? Why are we stuck with dead Presidents?

Quote: Why are we stuck with dead Presidents? I would make a very pertinent analogy for you comparing the actual usefulness of a dead one as opposed to a live one, but it probably would be frowned upon as an uncalled for political statement. Maybe we should be thankful for what we've got.....can you imagine the portrait of Nancy Pelosi or Barney Frank on our coinage? The way things are going, it may not be such a far fetched notion.

The way the things are going in here we'll sooner have Angelina Jolie and Jonas brothers on the US coins. (I'd say Brittney Spears but it's so 4 years old!)

There was no parameters given for the choices made ! most beautiful coins by measure of availability? Highly subjective yes beauty is in the eyes of the beholder I would consider only 4 of that 17 is beautiful

To my mind, the most beautiful coin ever is one that so familiar to American numismatists that it is quite forgotten, and that is the Liberty Walking half dollar. The neo classic style of an MS65 example cannot be beaten. Also I started a thread called 'Stuart Devlin coin designer', that relates to the common Aussie 20 cent piece, which discusses some of the challenges presented to the designer.

What a load of garbage. Modern coins are so ugly. They should have focused on 19th century coins.

Gothic Florin: One of my most appreciated coins is a Gothic Florin in nearly uncirculated condition. They are a much cheaper alternative and easier to obtain coin than the Gothic Crown, considered to be one of the most beautiful coins ever produced. Incidentally, about three gold Gothic crowns were made. Just imagine the price of one of those at auction! I do have a few US coins in nice grades as well. Basically, I have been an ancient collector for decades, but I do have a strong interest in British coins of the 19th century, because they were the common circulating medium of Australia from 1825 until 1910. There are about 100 types in this part of the British series, which allows for a lot of interest and study. Australia also produced Sydney Mint sovereigns from 1855, then Imperial sovereigns. Due to a severe shortage of small change during the 1860's, tradesmen produced half penny and penny tokens.
