Irish, I am not sure of anything when it comes to grade. I am pretty much a newbie, but they seem to be about that.
I don't have any 1930 or 1931 in MY collection, so none of those in the duplicates.
not all in the 40's I have a 1917, 20, 23, 26, 28, and then 34 and up (with some obviously missing.)
The 1928 might be in VF condition. Since I am new, I really wish I knew if I was undergrading them.
I also have some in the 1920s that are good for silver value only, full dates not readable, and they have been cleaned. I didn't put them in the book

I have a digital camera, but not exactly sure how to use it. Its something I have been meaning to do. I don't even know if it has a macro setting. I will see what I can do. I actually believe I have three 1928. One is each book, and a spare. Let me see what I can come up with, as I really want to learn how to do this, its as good a time as any. It may take me a while, but I will give it the old Navy effort.

I am not sure I get the joke there Tex, but I am sure it was funny. :) Thank goodness I'm not italian.
Anyhoo, the tutorial for posting pics doesn't seem to be working. I got a couple on the desktop, but not sure how to get them here from there.

I would hold out for a full roll. Since your almost to 50 posts you could sell them here. You could sell them here in small groups, it would be cheaper than selling on ebay. |

I would put it about VF-20.

Have been on the Uss South Carolina (CGN-37)and the USS Nimitz (CVN-68). Its looking like I will be headed to the USS George Washington next. As you can see, I got the pics up, so yay for me.  |

Thanks for the reply. Its nice to know I was pretty close with my assessment of the grade. As far as the pics, I read some hints and tips on here. No way I would have figured that out on my own. I don't remember who said it, but I kept the room dark, with a light (100W) near the coin. Put it on a black cloth, and I used a 10X loupe over the camera lens for magnification. That was a great tip. Only thing I couldn't do was keep the camera steady, since I don't have a tripod, or one of those other things. This was a great learning experience for me. |

This dime is VG-8 IMO,, less than half of the Fasces are visable Diagonals are Barely visable and broken. hair details above forehead, and at the ear are flat, wings show only the deepest detail lines. The best way to sell Merc's of this grade are by the roll,, the shipping on single coins will prohibit many from bidding,,or at least thsy do me,, I cannot see paying the 2.00 the coin is valued at and then adding 1.50 to 1.75 to get it in my hand,, and those are conservative,, many ebay sellers charge double that. One exception I will make is if a seller charges a flat 3.00 or something for no matter how many auctions of single circulated coins I buy,, on these I will bid and buy what I may need. Susan and Bobby have this type of shipping and it sets them apart from most. Rick Edited by Metalman

I concur with Rick on this one. VG-8. If this is the strongest detailed Merc you have then definitely would stick them in a roll and sell them as bullion. The ebay fees, and if you take Paypal, the Paypal fees also, will chew up any profit you make. The 1928 isn't the strongest detailed one, but the better condition ones are all in the 40s. I may just keep the second book and keep filling it with dupes for a little while. I am fairly close to a roll, even without the 22 sitting in the book. Thanks for the comments and opinions. Good luck with your quest for mercs, Irish.

I'd say VG10. With portions of the diagonals visible and over half of the sticks visible, it's slightly better than a VG8 (in my opinion). In answer to the OP, I would sell them as a roll. By the way, you have over 50 posts so you can post links to your auctions in the B/S/T section or even sell these there if you wish. |
