In Michigan, some of the rest areas don't accept bills in the vending machines. Instead, you break or exchange the bills in a change machine that gives out dollar coins. I guess that's one way to get them into circulation.

Looks like I need to drive down to the nearest rest area and buy a Pepsi. I had to stop by the store on the way home last night. A rarity, and when I do, I usually use my credit card in the self check. Well, last night I decided to feed a five dollar bill in for my less than three dollar hamburger buns, hoping for a dollar coin or two. No such luck. I got Two Cents and a message on the screen to "Please see cashier to complete this transaction." The cashier had my two dollar notes waiting for me. Feeling dejected, I looked in the CoinStar reject bin on the way out. Nothing. At least one of those cents was copper.

The paradox: every self-checkout I've seen accepts (26.5mm) Dollar coins for payment, but they dispense $1 change amounts only in notes. If I could find a machine (besides Light Rail ticket dispensers) that dispensed Dollar coins, I would save a few trips to the bank. I've been using Dollar coins to wash my car for years, and now Denver's new parking meters all accept modern Dollar coins. I'm going through a fair amount of these coins per month. The new parking meters take credit/debit cards but not notes, so Dollar coins are the smart way to go. A $25 roll of Dollar takes up much less space than $25 in Quarters, and I'm not paying bank/card fees just to park my car.

I have a couple of times ( right after it was filled ) the people on my shift think it's funny, come laughing to me for change, i'll be looking at the coins as I count them out, just to make sure I didn't miss something

We have vending machines that use $1 coins also. You can put in a 5, 10 or $20 and get all dollar coins back. Oftentimes, you will see many BU coins. I keep a folder at my desk and fill it up with the gems I find.

The coins I received are full of luster, and all look BU, but the lighting in the picture I took is making them look more spectacular than they really are.

I've found that the light rail ticket machines are great sources for both sacs and presidents, but all of the banks I have checked have only had presidents. I wonder if the presidential series has more hope than the sacs, and perhaps there is (slightly) more demand for them? Or perhaps that's just what the banks get..

Was at the local corner gas station and I've gotten to know the evening cashier fairly well over the years. This past weekend an older gentleman paid for $1 gas with a 1921 Morgan. I was shocked! Of course he didn't wanna unload it for the $15 I offered. Haha. Also had a buddy in undergrad who worked part-time in a liquor store and he'd leave almost nightly with a little junk silver. Where am I when this stuff happens!

Grocery stores and the banks in them. Go up to the customer service counter and ask for halves and dollar coins - they hate having to deal with them and will fall over backwards to give them to you. I've nearly completed the SBA, Ike and SAC sets from grocery stores and made a small profit selling the excess on ebay. Haven't gotten a Morgan yet, but I will someday!

When I used to work at a gas station customers used to pay in silver certificates, silver dimes, you name it. I had no interest back then, and they went with my first wife in the divorce.
