"GDJMSP was exactly right about coins coming out of Asia, IMO. Many, many counterfeits come out of that area especially Trade dollars and Bust Dollars, etc. I myself am extra leery when they show up."

GDJMSP gave you what you were looking for...advice. You may have not liked it and I sure if you go through all of his posts you can get on him for one sentence or another.

The fact of the matter is if you buy coins being shipped out of the far east, the odds are you will get junk. It is not just one seller, but 99% of all far east ebay sellers.

As for the French coin that was posted, you received a well, thought out response with research most of us wouldn't venture into. Just because you picked up a coin at a show doesn't mean it could not be fake. Years ago before grading services hit the scene, it was estimated that almost half of the 1916-D Mercs being sold at shows were fake (added mint mark), so it is VERY possible. GDJMSP gave you well intended advice and was almost apologizing as he gave it.

After going back and reading some of these posts and threads (before I made this post), I discovered that a 2 week vacation (minimum) was the order of business by a vote of 3 to 1. I see we are the destination.

Hi Stujoe,
I recognized your username, but hadn't connected you with Shrek (his avatar on CP) until now. You're always on there! Appeciate your posts there.

Your comments reagrding how forums change are spot on. It's interesting to see a froum evolve, but can be sad when the is a forum you feel part of which you no longer enjoy.

Thanks! If my computer is on, I usually have the site loaded up whether I am at the computer or not. Things run smoothly most all of the time but I do like to keep an eye on things.

Been there too. I wonder how many forums are started as a result of that?

Hate to pull this back, but wanted to make one quick note on GDJMSP. Now I only know Doug from the forums, but learned to respect his numismatic knowledge and eye for coins. While he may be a little quick to pull the trigger on a coin, it is based on many years within the hobby. Is he right 100% of the time, no. No one can be. As a dealer who has seen thousands of coins, my first thought on any coin coming from Asia is "fake". Am I right all the time? NO. My odds of being right are far better than being wrong. It is simply profiling. Now for the coin in question, I am not familiar with the thread or the coin, so I will not comment on either. However, I am familiar with the knowledge of GDJMSP and would side on his judgement 100% of the time. Not that I think that he is perfect, just demonstrated many times his numismatic knowledge.
Too often on the internet it is easy to take things personally. I get caught up in that on occasion myself. Humor doesn't always come across that way in print. So please don't think that I am picking on you. I don't know you personally and don't know GDJMSP personally either. We shared moderator duties on CT for nearly a year, and I bought a few coins from him. I have not spoken to him in months, but still will tell you that he has absolutely the best "eye" for coins that I have ever come across from a collector.
I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with him.

Okay, back to the whole forum thing:

I have also seen forums change. It is hard to stay the same while you have so many diverse people contributing. What attracts me most is coin topics. I like the easy questions as well as the ones that make me blow the dust off of the referrence material. I love contributing, teaching, learning, and just plain discussing coins.
Susan and Bobby worked their tails off to provide a good quality home for us. Behind the scenes a few others helped to put this little forum on the right track. To all of them, they have my thanks, and support!

Those are wonderful points indeed. GD has lost some credibility with me due to his brash determinations at the drop of a hat but I still like hearing what he has to say. Anyways now about the forums perhaps someone could make a master list here in just one big message in a new thread...

Well, I gotta admit, I love the PCGS forum. You sort of need a thick skin to participate, but I have learned a ton there, and it is by far the largest a most diverse forum (from State Quarter collectors to multi-millionaire registry set builders, from vest-pocket ebay dealers to mega million dollar volume dealers and auction houses, and a few former TPG graders to add to the mix). You can search the archives and find discussion and advice on most any coin topic.

Regarding other forums I am registered on:

1. Coin Community -- I like this one so far. Likely will be #2 for me. It certainly seems to be pretty active right out of the gate!!

2. CoinTalk -- I still post occasionally, and I like GD. I was disappointed when ND and Susan left, and it seemed the moderators that were left (except GD) were a tad overzealous at times. Also, having 4 moderators and 1 administrator for maybe two dozen or so active members seems a bit overkill. PCGS has only 2 (that I know of)!

3. CoinPeople -- Post occasionally, I like the "Popular Coin Idol" and "Ugly Coin" contests

4. NGC Forum aka "Sleepy Hollow". I post occasionally, a lot of the people from PCGS are there, so somewhat redundant with the PCGS forum. I submit coins to NGC, so I use it to keep up with NGC events and issues.

5. Toned Coin Collectors Society (TCCS) Forum -- This forum is really cool and is catching on among the toned coin crowd. If you have any interest at all in toned coins check it out -- a lot of good educational material is posted there. Very friendly too -- "flame" threads are not tolerated. They like to show off their toned coins there, so I will post more once I refine my photography skills and get more of my coins imaged!!

I see that on 3/22/2005 that there were 310 members on at one time...I think I did my math right...that is more than 2 dozen!!!

I like toned coins sometimes...I'll go to that link!!!
