Agreed Rodime and big time! But I was thinking BU rolls as opposed to mint. I have to try hard not to buy mint :)

One thing I would do different. I would have latched on the family collection 20 years earlier and preserved it. Too much crust :(

If I'd have known back then what I do now I would have kept all that silver spent on comic books and candy! The organization of my collection and buying key dates as mentioned above. I would have probably bought much more than I did, especially silver and gold.

I know a guy as as kid who bought comic books and candy as well. Only he kept his comic books, and that collection of comic books is mighty valuable now!

I wonder if he kept the candy as well, how much that would be worth today?

DON'T BUY JUNK (common low grade)I have tons of common dates. I would go back and buy higher grade key dates and more paper as it has taken off.

I wouldn't have cashed the stuff that I wish I had now. Regular coins, nothing extremely valuable.....as far as I know.
Uh-oh.

I wish I had purchased only keys and in very high grades instead of a lot of random common material. I would have a much more valuable collection today if that was my mantra. It would also be really simple to fill in the rest of the holes now!

To be honest, I couldn't afford the keys back when I started collecting and think I may have become bored by having only a few coins.I got everything I could out of circulation and collected nearly everything. Not sure I would change anything about my 45 years of collecting coins.

I'd stick to high grade (for me) Vickies XF to AU .. whatever denomination, but Cents for me. Go heavy on the varieties.

Billfrak is right. Buy the best your budget will allow. That is the best numismatic investment in the long run. Always has been.

What would I change - nothing - not really. When I was a kid I collected from the change in my purse; in my teen years I still only collected from my change - but not as much because I spent it all on clothes and makeup! As a young adult we didn't have much change what with buying a house and raising a family. Occasionally I would find something in my change and tuck it away. Well - 45+ years later - I haven't changed my habit too much - still collect from the change in my purse but for the past 20+ years I have been buying mint or BU rolls and just tucking them away. The biggest thing that has changed in my collecting habits is that I have expanded my interests over the years to include many more aspects of coin collecting. I don't buy from dealers often and have never purchased anything at a coin show. Would I change anything - sure - wish I had more money to spend on older stuff I never got in my change.

I would have searched out the 65 small bead and held onto more silver, bought gold at every opportunity and would be laughing now.

Reading through all the answers on this topic I started a while back leads me to three main points that are a common denominator for all collectors if they could go back with the knowledge they have acquired.
>acquire the KEY dates first
>acquire the highest grades budget could afford
>hoard silver/gold
Interestingly enough these are also my sentiments when looking back at my collecting life.

I traded a bunch of key coins in demoninations that I had little interest in half's and quarters for keys in dimes/nickels and cents. I wish I had kept all those coins.

I would have put all my spare money into gold coins 30 to 40 years ago.
