Why We Use (Used) Gold As Money.

So perhaps we are in a 'gold bubble'? It may pop with a loud 'thud'.

Actually gold is the 19th most abundant element in the earth's crust.

I have owned at least a few gold coins, ancient and modern over decades. I have seen gold prices rise and fall several times. The whatever current gold price just does not interest me much now. It is just that gold has a legitimate place in the history of coinage, and because of that, has a no more or less legitimate place in my collection. Same for silver (or copper) for that matter.

I even have a small representative collection of coins made from all of the metals and alloys from which coins have been made, just for the interest to someone who may not know a thing about coins. About the only alloy not represented is Goloid.

Charles Ponzi was name-dropped on this week's episode of Boardwalk Empire. One of the secondary characters was complaining about how he lost all of his money investing it with him. The episode, set sometime before the 1920 elections, times well with the collapse of the scheme.
