Remind them that coin collecting is the hobby of kings and that they are poor undereducatated peons who will need nothing else in life other that the line "would you like fries with that..?"
Then ask them how much gold they own. They'll shut up pretty quickly.

Quote: Just to make things clear I'm not still in school, this was about 87-89 that these things happened to me while I was in 6th or 7th grade. Wow slash, you've been carrying that around for a long time! You've come to the right place for therapy! I told you to put your change in your pocket the next time you are in the lunch line!

Some of my family members make fun of me. My dad thinks I'm crazy. The only other person who collects coins in my immediate family (a cousin) thinks I'm crazy. But I've been saving up my money, and I'm proud of what I have saved so far. Nothing beats getting a 1964 silver half for fifty cents when it's worth a few cents over ten dollars (my opinion )

I started collecting when I was 11 years old. When I became a teenager, my collecting habits went underground. I still collected, but I wouldn't let any of my friends know. None of my classmates or friends knew much about coins so I pretended to know nothing either.
It wasn't until I graduated from high school did I start to openly collect again. For me, it was one of those cases of trying to hide part of myself from fear of embarrassment. As an adult I find that many people I know also hid their collecting habits while they were students.
The best piece of advice I could give is, don't let it deter you from collecting the things you like.

I don't get made fun of for much of anything, I'm big and have a big scary beard. Kinda like like a cross between a young Santa Claus and Charles Manson.
If anyone ever did say anything. I would ask them "whats wrong with collecting money".
I also collect 100 dollar bills. I could stare at a book of hundreds all day.

Hi all! I never got made fun of for collecting coins until I got married. Now I get it all the time from my wife. She thinks I'm obsessed and have an addiction. Actually when I started out in Junior High back in '87, most of my friends and acquaintances helped me out. They would bring me coins to look at and give my opinion. Some would even ask if I wanted to trade a "wheaty" etc. I've always thought of it as a "Fun little savings account" My savings gets bigger and bigger!

I'm a pretty young Numismatist, still in high school and I have never gotten any ridicule so far. It helps having a friend who has an even bigger collection than you though. Between me and him, we've convinced some of our friends to always be looking through their bills and small change.

It's amazing how much some of you guys care about money. The older you get, the less money matters, and the more your happiness matters. I make a pittance every year, but I'm happy as a pig in with my life.

I'm in therapy..and my therapist said that this was a great hobby to distract my mind from my current troubles. That's true...and that's what I tell people who ask....and if they still make fun of me....I beat the crap out of them. Not sure which one is more fun....?

Collecting my little tin tuppences? Those little discs of metal with funny bumps on?
NO......I have more fun by poking fun at myself! That way, folks do not have to figure out that I am eccentric....they are told!
Don't we in the CCF already know that money was made round to go round?
I don't suffer from insanity, I love every minute of it!

People poke fun and say ignorant things often to me. They are all friends and family. I get things like "you paid $100 for a dime? I have jars of them, what will you give me?" Sometimes it gets to be overwhelming and hurtful, but I always get the last laugh because guess who they come beg to borrow money when they hit tough times. I respond by okay "ill give you a dime, you pay me back $100. Don't worry, I have jars full of dimes you can borrow"
