You might want to get that 1809 half dollar graded. Early coins are becoming increasingly collectible and there are some rare Overton varieties. Looks like yours is probably an F-12 and should be worth north of $100 slabbed. Perhaps someone on this board can ID your Overton variety based on the picture and give you an idea as to its rarity.
EDIT: Looking at the multiple coin picture it seems the obverse of the 1809 is cleaned. That may swing the balance against sending since it would just come back bagged (PCGS-0 or "cleaned" label). ANACS would give it a details grade but it probably wouldn't have enough value in that condition to warrant the expense.

Hard to make out the date on the large cent but it looks like an 1854 in VF condition. Probably a $30 type coin not really worth the cost of slabbing.

I would be interested in seeing a better pic of the 1935 Commemorative Half Dollar on both sides but I would send the 1809 Half in for grading for sure.ANACS has a special on Dollars and Cents right now.

Numisnut- When I get home I will see what I can do about better pics. Fenton- That date is hard to make out because the last number does not exist. Never did I did take a Shammy and wipe it a tiny bit to get a better sight at the surface. Also the 1809 has not been cleaned to my knowledge. I inherited all these coins and several hundred more from my Grandad. I am really really interested to have a real professional to take a look at the Half Dime. |

I would like to see better pictures of the Half Dime ( I know its damaged but still want to see better pictures of the Obverse and Reverse) as well as know what date the Shield nickel and 3 cent nickel is |

Regardless of how much your coins are worth, are you planning on selling them? If not, why bother spending money on something that is not necessary. Only if you plan on selling coins is it a good idea to have them authenticated. Grading is really insignificent today since fake, counterfeit, copies, could have any grade possible but if authenticated they are usually also graded. HOWEVER, again, if not planning on selling a coin, serves no real purpose.

I think it is important for accounting. You don't want to have on your books a $200,000 coin collection only to discover that it is actually worth $40,000 due to the fact you over graded it, own counterfeits, etc...
While some people may have no intention to sell, their heirs will inherit that burden or they may be forced to by circumstance. Don't want to find, at that point, that the value on your books is not real.

1809 half does appear to be cleaned, looks like O-106. Many of the coins appear to be cleaned, some appear to be lightly polished. Glare caused by the plastic on the 2X2's does cause some problems.
