I have a few questions.. What's an/a(?) RPD? "Quite few" in the Shield nickel series.. Meaning.. what exactly? A few as in.. a few eggs are boiling, or a few tenthousands :P

RPD= repunched date, from the era where dates were added to the dies by hand instead of being part of the hub design. Because of the addition by hand, some of the dates were punched twice which leads to doubling. I do not have any concrete numbers in front of me but I would guess that there are a few dozen RPD varieties for the entire Shield nickel series of 1866-1883, some of them rare while others are exceedingly common.

Okay thanks. Googled it as well.
I see, then I hope for the best then.. however I have no way of finding out. What's this NCG, DavidZerbato looked for varieties?

http://www.shieldnickels.net/This page has many varieties listed. However no explanations or pictures.. So doesn't help me at all. I'd appreciate if someone could take time to identify this variety.. Thanks.

RPD, what does that make to the value of the coin? And what about different varieties? :)

RPD's are always collectible, you have to check the Shield nickel references for this one. However, collectible or not, except for some very dramatic ones [like the 11888866] they do not carry a big value.

Well I don't have any catalog for US, besides Krause World coins.. and I haven't found any webpage that actually explains the differences in the varieties..

Yeah I've seen the list on shieldnickels.net or what the page was.. Quite a handful... This coin probably is one of the common ones.. but you never know.. :)

I looked on NGC's variety plus, you need to be a member to do so, but it lists a bunch of different varieties they recognize. It's not exhaustive, but did list a dozen or two.

A word of warning about NGC, if they are listing Cherrypickers varieties, you should know that their attribution of shield nickl varieties is almost NEVER correct.

Your photo is not nearly detailed enough to make a firm conclusion, but all I see in the photo looks like Strike Doubling, not an RPD.

I've got a better camera now actually.. A Nikon D90, with 105mm zoom should do the trick I think.
This is actually my first post on at least 6 months... hmm.. :)
