What's Machine Doubling compared to just doubling? :)

Thanks for input!

Okay I read some about MD and die doubling. I'd say that this is MD, since it's not just in a few places. The coin has probably moved slightly during the minting process?

What you have is a nice example of Longacre doubling. It has no premium value.

It is Longacre doubling, not Machine Doubling.

Is there any difference between Longacre and MD ? I mean visually, not the process.

Biggest clue is that Longacre doubling is typically seen on both sides of the letter, sometimes all the way around a letter or feature. You may see it on opposite sides of adjacent letters. Machine Doubling is caused by the shifting of the die at the end of the strike and the die can't shift in mutliple directions at the same time or in different directions on adjacent letters. The Longacre doubling is actually a part of the die.

Longacre doubling--and there aren't any documented doubled dies this year.
I don't see a repunched date either. I would grade this one VF30, and may be cleaned.
Retail on an 1879 in VF30 is around $50.

I have the Longacre doubling on a Seated Half with arrows. I've posted it here, and perhaps you can find more information.

There is no "added value", but the lore of Lonacre and this doubling is a great topic and lesson. For someone with a type set trying to exhibit the history of coins and their various attributes, this is certainly a valuable side note. As you can tell by my post, even some of the most brilliant collectors have been alluded by the Longacre double.

Yeah. I like US coins, I think I'll be a collector of Swedish and US coins :) Other countries haven't interested me as much yet, I'll probably sell those.

I have recently come across the same issue with a 65' that I thought had a doubled obverse legend. I was directed to this forum - and received a quick and thorough education on the particular point. Sorry that my coin has no added value, I am grateful for the knowledge gained. Many thanks.
