CLick on the link I provided........ The top brands are DANSCO, WHITMAN, LITTLETON, LIGHTHOUSE, INTERCEPT, HARRIS ......they're all there. Once you're on the site, then click on "coin folders and albums"....and you're set ! Have fun ! .....  Edited by eaglefoot

OK...I went to the first link provided. Anybody know if there is a "best" brand? Anybody know if any of the brands make a folder for modern cents that includes already printed slots for all of the newer pennies (shield type, etc.)? Just trying to make this very easy for the boy...lol...

You will proably want a 'Whitman coin folder'. They can be found at Wizards or if you Google it you will find many links. ebay is a good place to buy coins at auction...you will be able to find lots of modern cents. Alan (pastorals) |

For just a basic folder for your "Moderns".......I'd suggest a Littleton or a Whitman folder.......  |

 The "boy" will LOVE finding those Cents from the '70's and 80's and plugging them into the folder ! As well as the shiny new ones ! |

A 5 year old boy, if he gets into coin collecting is always attracted initially by the unusual. I would start him with coins from circulation that are not often seen, so he can involve himself in searching for them.
On occasion, you might wish to add a few silver coins to his collection as presents.
But don't give him too many coins. What you need to do is spark his enthusiasm, so he will be self motivated.
Psychologically, examine yourself and consider what started your own interest in coin collecting.

I would rather not go here but if you put 1982 cents to present coins into a folder they may become ruined over time.
I have a folder full of shiny ones with green corrosion around them.
Stick with the albums for those zinc coins.
Of course it may not matter and you may want your boy to take them out,
put them back, get better ones, and basically play with them as he goes.
After all they're only pennies.

For a 5 yr old, the Littletons may be easier to get the coin in the holes. Sometimes Whittman's hole are very tight. You may have to put coins in them to expand the hole before giving it to the kids.

Basically true. Most kids that start out collecting do use those Whitman Folders. If you can afford one, I'd suggest you look into an Album, not a folder. Although only 5 years old, he would get used to slidding out the plastic slides in no time to insert coins. And those folders are a pain for a 5 year old to press coins into those slots. I've known of kids that end up using a rubber hammer for that. Also, if you look enough you'll find many on line coin supply places to order thoes Albums from. There is one that no one has mentioned yet called something like Brent something or other but since I never order from those places, not sure of the name. There must be banks in your area and if possibly purchase rolls or even a $50 bag of pennies for your kid to start. . Edited by just carl

thanks all for the advice...I got a couple folders...if he gets into it, I can get him a dansco album for his birthday or something.

A wise decision, in my opinion. I plan to get my son some folders when he is about five or so (he will be three in April). If he takes to the hobby, I am hoping he will ask me for albums.  |

You do realize your thinking of making your kids DANSCO PEOPLE, don't you? Look into Whitman too. Us Whitman people always feel left out around here. |
