heard that some type of tech that can read filed serial numbers may work to read lost mint marks having to do with density of the metal where it was compressed more or less for areas with/without raised/lowered sections. but probably costs too much to be worth it for slicks

I am not buying into that just yet.... the sensitivity of such an apparatus would have to be incredible... Metals can only be compressed to finite degrees.... while it is logical that the fields could be denser than the devices, the effective measurability of the differences might be inconceivable to me.... who is going to buy into this questionable technology, much less buy a coin with invisible key features? Nope, as of right now, the Acme BS2000 is the best thing we have to work with...

Yes, I recall reading that somewhere also.... never gave it much though until right now though.... The very notion is absolutely absurd in the case of worn devices on a coin though.... the coin's devices might be the areas of least density, but when they are worn away (down to field level), what differences could possibly remain? This is someone's pipe dream... nothing more.

Actually Carl, that sounds far more logical than the wonder machine that is supposed to replace the BS2000.

The coins are P mint, but what I want is to know where you are detecting? I have only found 18 mercs in 20 years. and you are finding 2 1916's at a time.
where are you digging?

Metalman - I will take that as an invitation to tell about my detecting finds this year. 25+ mercs, 14 Barbers, 4 silver halves, 250+ wheats, etc. Last year was better. I hunt ballfield, old yards, fairgrounds, county parks, places pounded to death....I gravitate to the trashiest spots, they give up the best in old keepers. Last year I dug 600+ wheats and 70 silvers. Lots of IH's too, and a 1758 reale here in lower Michigan - crazy!

Hey, it's great that you dug up 2 '16 mercs already.......try as I might I cannot find good places to detect anymore. It's very frustrating.
