Weavus got it!

Mike, see the difference between 1 and 8? 8 is a "caret" symbol.

And yes, those are Iraqi, not Thai!

Sudanese, as I suspected 5 and 10 ghirsh, both dated AH 1376 = AD 1956.

Yes. However, I don't want to be splitting this collection up coin by coin, so will try to sell it whole. I am more concerned that it goes to a good home than that I make a fortune from it (!)............thus I would rather sell direct to a collector than to a coin dealer.

So, I'm open to offers.

I'll adjust the list shortly to reflect the new advice received yesterday.

Here is a final test for you guys........

This is the last unidentified coin, and it is in a terrible state. I can read "GEORGIUS" on one side, and see absolutely nothing at all on the other. Hope you can help!

Mike

I just had a similar situation. My wifes father died and left me coins 2 weeks ago.
He traveled suring the end of the korean war late 55-early 60's in the army.

he left me coins from japan , Spain , Italy ,Africa ,various euro countries, British caribbean,Newfoundland,Cuba

Of all the coins some Japanese 100 yens have silver and worth 5-8 dollars each. The rest are just common stuff to each country he traveled to

When you think about each coins on that desk. They were not gathered for a collection of value but just as souvenirs to mark the places he traveled to. If it was about value they would have hoarded gold coins and rare coins but they didn't they just grabbed a few neat coins from each country they visited.

looks like a cent . I'm no expert just a stab at it

Its so damaged its not worth anything.

The face is definitely recognizable - George III of Britain.
Judging by the size (compared to other coins on your previous pics) it's a halfpenny. (29 - 30 mm across)
He had four different obverse types. Looking at the shape of his nose and relative position of the effigy to the name - it's type 2. So, with a high degree of confidence I can say it's a British halfpenny minted in 1774 or 1775 (the only two years that type was produced).
Of course in present condition it's just about 10 grams of copper.

Great....thanks for that. I just don't know how you can see anything to recognise in that, but I'm very grateful that you can. As you suspected, it is 29mm in diameter. Awful as the condition is, I find this coin interesting as is it the oldest in the collection. As an architect my everyday work is with ancient buildings, centuries older than this coin.....I love the thought that a building I am working on might have had occupants who used this money.

Mike, according to the rules at this point you cannot sell your lot on the forum. When you reach 50 posts you can reply to a trade, although I understand it's not your intention.
If you'd like to dispose of the coins sooner (than 250 posts, when you'd be able to sell here) you have to choose a different venue, e.g. ebay or Craigslist.

Humble apologies. Sorry, I really should have read the rules more carefully first. OK, I withdraw my comment about making them available.......that wasn't the main reason I came here, afterall.......which was simply to find out about something I had no knowledge of whatsoever.

Apologies again.

No apologies needed, Mike, I understand your situation. We were glad to help you ID your coins (and will do more if you let us take a better pick at your other Arabic/Persian pieces).
The rules were designed to protect us from aggressive sellers who constantly look for new markets.

Again, if you don't want to go through the trouble of ebay, etc., you can make a contest here on the forum. Here is that forum link:

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...?FORUM_ID=24

I'm sure one of the moderators would be willing to help you set it up, if need be.

Or, again, donate to your local Boy Scout / Girl Scout group to earn merit badges.

Either way, you will have the satisfaction of helping others & be assured that your coins found a much appreciated new home, whose new "parents" will take good care of them.

Or, one last thought, you could pass them down to your grandson/granddaughter, nephew, niece, etc. as family mementos / souvenirs.

I think any of those suggestions would give your uncle pleasure.

I agree with all of the suggestions thus far (not because I gave a couple of them either LOL) BUT should you decide to go the ebay route, let the folks know here. I know I saw a few I might bid on if they were in the lot. I think that is OK by forum rules and if it is not I'm sure someone will catch it and correct me.
And if what I just said violates any rules, my apologies. I didn't see anything specific
