Hey Maineman I do not have any plans to search pennies, just a project to sell coppers and get my kids employed making some extra money while they go to college. I saw your other post, and I live in the Florida panhandle. I guess what I really need to find is one or several people who like to search the new ones for the errors and see if they would like to buy them, they would not have to worry about ordering cents and would have less to return and look through with out the coppers. Yes with that any wheat's would be gone, but I don't think there are that many wheat's left, I guess in that scenario it would have to be people who just are looking for the errors in the newer zincs, idea probably wouldn`t pan out, just a thought. I am not sure where you post more so I am posting this in both paces.......Darin

GoldenMiner ...that is exactly what I was thinking.Cents are a pain to get from the bank and if I were closer, I would gladly take $10K just to search.There are a few guys from Florida that search pennies and I'm wondering if a dedicated post might get some interest.Personally I have found more errors and varieties in the zincs and wouldn't miss the coppers anyway.I know the rules don't allow you to post for sale or trade, but I'm wondering if this might be OK since there is really no profit involved, just an exchange of denominations.Might ask a moderator to find the bast way.

murrel. I'm fron San Diego as well. best copper % is in the customer rolls IMO...
its nice, I get to take my time and search varieties and then sort out the copper. I take my time and hand count every penny. not a pain at all for me. I used to sell off $50 face but it just got to heavy and $25 face was heavy enough, I didnt want to chance the box breaking. I like shipping them in the bank boxes. haven't thought about the bags. just too much movement for me. I like things secured.
i wonder why no one is paying close to face on these. when the price of copper is $4.40 a/lb and $25 face is worth $75ish melt, then why wont people pay close to that? is it because they are illegally melting them and factoring in the extra expense of melting and then purifying? would someone make that much more off of $25 face($75 melt), buying that $25 for $50, then reselling it for $75? I can see how the next guy could make a profit selling .999 copper...

My mother has been telling me to keep any copper we come across, but I've got a few rolls taking up space (and possible "profit"), yet I hoard all 60s and 72s....plus with going through cent boxes, I'll start keeping the copper separate. I know not to get worked up much about making a profit as my main reason for selling would be to help others out who want to hoard the copper, and getting at least FV-plus.

I once called my bank to see if they had any bags from the coin counter they could sell me.. she thought I meant empty bags and said they get them from Office (depot.. max.. one of those)
I have been saving the empty bags to re-use for mailing.

I was looking at boxes. $21 for 50 seems high considering the size.

Right now I'm just keeping all copper pennies. I feel they are like wheat cents. Maybe next five years or so they might be in higher demand.

I absolutely agree with you, solotime. Even though copper is starting to drop slightly I am still stocking up on my coppers from roll searching.

Out of curiosity, when sorting out the copper pennies is it worth sorting the coppers into the different mints as well? Do people pay more for the "s" copper pennies?

If the copper is being sorted and saved as bullion, the s-mint is irrelevant. If you are looking at any given Lincoln Cent as a "coin" as opposed to a piece of copper bullion for eventual melting, well then, many folks have some extra affinity for s-mint coins. |
