Great to see another pic of this coin! That was one worn die.
I'm curious why they would go to such lengths to retool the die.
Perhaps there were a shortage of Rupee dies for that year?

1921 is one of the harder dates, especially in higher grades, it has a small mintage of only about 5 million with 1922 being the smallest mintage of only 2 million. Compare that to some mintages of over 200 million for EACH mint per year. 1918 and 1919 were huge years for mintage, nearly 900 million rupee in those two years alone, with another 100 million in 1920. Perhaps the mint believed there would be enough coins already minted to meet demand and didn't have enough dies prepared?

Wow...the lettering on the reverse really stands out! The obverse die looks very worn too.

From this perspective I see that it is MS, but the close up ...!
It's an amazing example! Thanks, Kurt and Sean!

Awesome pics! That's a beauty!

They were determined to get their money's worth out of that reverse die, weren't they? The cracks give it much more character.

A very unique coin! Just curious, Did you send the coin in for grading or did you buy it already slabbed?

Such obvious handwork on a modern is a fascinating contrast. I'm making note of this for future shows--here's to finding another!

Sorry to drag up such an old topic; but I just found it.

It strikes me that too many details are off on this coin. Some places details are missing (Scrolls are more plain) some places have too much detail, The clovers are too high relief and the leaves flanking the Bombay dot are also too deep. The Lotus at the top, the petals don't look right. What is the M above the top lotus? The King's Crown looks wrong and slightly out of shape.

My immediate gut reaction to this piece is it is a contemporary jeweler's copy of the 1921 Rupee.

I wonder if Chris is onto something here. I pooled a few pics of the internet for comparison. The coin in question in on the bottom right. I can see some discrepancies (that could not be attributed to a retooled die). What do other people think?

I'm not qualified to speak about this coin, but PCGS did grade it as genuine.

The "M" is a very good find! I have never seen an M before on a 1921 Rupee. It is very possible this piece was a specimen of some kind! Perhaps even a trial strike from an unfinished die or a overpolished modified restrike that was not lacquered like the rest of the BI Restrikes.
