The price will adjust once a bunch of them are melted. Commems have been minted far in excess of the number of collectors for 100+ years.

You forgot the other tie-in coin, with Mary and the baby Jesus.

The links only work for those with a paid subscription.

Before anyone gets any ideas, do not post a copy of the article here.

The amount of commems currently minted is in excess. This will change as the price of silver and gold increases and less are sold. However the pre 1940 commems are in shorter supply and the prices are on the rise. Commems are your best low cost investment now,old or new. Only my opinion.

Yep, actually had people call it that. Better than "gold dollar", I guess.

That is one of my favorite moderns and it is the one that fills the Commemorative Dollar hole in my 7070. Since I live in the city that kicked it all off, I probably have a closer association to Lewis and Clark than most people. It is also a coin that my wife purchased for me.

I attended the Peace Medal nickel release on the St Louis riverfront in 2004. Of course, there were Lewis and Clark reenactors there but they arrived in style complete with a keelboat landing on the riverfront. Also present were representatives of the major tribes encountered on the expedition, Ambassadors from France and Spain, then-mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore, and the Secretary of the Interior. Oh yeah, and 200,000 nickels...
