Hi NEAesculus! Welcome to the CC Family. I highly recommend buying the latest copy of the Greg McDonald guidebook, and also a subscription to Coin and Banknote is a good idea too. I hope you enjoy your time here, and make sure you ask any sort of question. The only silly question is the one you don't ask!

If you Google the word "smiley" or "emoticon" you will come up with heaps of places which allow you to download smileys.

Hi NEAesculus,
Welcome to the CC Forum - Aussie Section.
I also recommend you get the CAB magazine and either or both the Guides - McDonalds and Renniks, but hold off a couple of months if you are not in a big hurry as the new editions will be out for Christmas.
Enjoy.

Welcome to the CC Family NEAesculus.
Feel free to ask all you want.
I agree with Wayne (Brissyboy), the magazine and books he suggested to purchase is well worth it.

I'm still here. The reality is that I completely forgot about that post nearly a year ago, and was quite surprised when I "found" this site today and noticed that post of mine. I guess I got busy after the move.
Anyway I have been collecting Australian coins for over a year now. I wasn't sure where to start at first. I thought I would put together a type collection, starting with decimal coins, but found it difficult to determine where to draw the line, so I am now fully entrenched with doing a full decimal set of RAM coins of 1c - $2 in UNC condition.
I have been a quite frustrated with the number of issues the RAM have produced in the last couple of years. But rather than have regrets later, I have been obtaining all the new stuff as it is released, as well as trying to obtain the older issues.
I now live in Melbourne, we moved from the Gold Coast a few months ago.

G'day NEAesculus, U suggest that you save your money: don't get drawn into NCLT - they're not real coinage. There's plenty of fun to be had putting together a comprehensive set of circulating Oz decimals. Peter in Darwin

I hear ya Peter, and I have struggled with it over the year. Without trying to sound too arrogant, the $200 or so it takes per year to keep up with the RAM's new NCLT stuff isn't a huge issue. I figure if I ever change my mind, it's easy enough to flick them on ebay. So far, my major purchases have still been US coins, although they are a bit tough to find over here. I have started to study Pre-decimal Australian coins, but need to understand a lot more, before obtaining any. I am quite drawn to the 1910 series.

G'day, 1910 is important, and unique. But try and find a better grade of florin, without selling a house. I've got very nice 3d & 6d of 1910, and a not-bad shilling, but florins in any grade rarely come up. And don't forget the 1911 bronze while you're at it. Peter in Darwin

I obtained an UNC 1910 3d a few months ago, just so I could look at it. I only paid $50 for it since it has a small scratch on the obverse, but you can't see it with the naked eye.
I am pretty picky when it comes to grading, so this one will probably get the flick when I decide to put the full set together. For now, I just enjoy looking at it.
The other Pre-decimals I have an attraction to other than the 1910's are the 2 Crown Issues and the Commerative Florin issues of '27, '34/35 ( had an AUnc and LOST it!!) '51 and '54. Eventually I would like to have all of these in UNC condition.
