I especially like the useless photos. Why would I care what a coin looks like sideways in the slab? Doesn't say much for the actual condition of the coin in the plastic, does it?

Sigh, I guess this is the part where I own up and confess I bought a coin from this guy. I think I'm gonna stick with "I'm new" as my excuse =P.

Noxx - Don't feel too bad. I hope that you got a good item from this guy. I am also new to the hobby and have overpaid for a number of things. Knowledge is key! That is why I am here. At the very least I have learned that what appears too be a GREAT deal, probably isn't.

Noxx, ALL of us have done this and gone through the experience. It's part of the learning experience. I just hope it wasn't too expensive a lesson for you. If you get a chance, I wouldn't mind seeing a decent picture of the coin you bought so to be able to assess its actual grade from whatever it stated on the slab.

Cheap lesson, about $40.. when I get the slab, I'll get a pic for ya, as best I can with my digi cam anyway.

Well this coin arrived today, a '27-d Peace dollar that was slabbed as MS64... PFFFFT, This coin is VF/XF at best.

However.. I contacted the seller, expecting the blow-off, and received this reply.

No problem....I usually sell coins I buy from HCGS, but I bought a number of these slabbed coins from ANC and have received similar comments, I am not buying anything else from them and will gladly refund upon receipt. Please return the coin and I will refund price and shipping. I apologize for the inconvenience.

HCGS isn't any award winner either, but at least he's honest.

He sounds honest, but wait until he's confirmed receipt of the coin and refunded your money.

I'm having a hard time reconciling the fact he's the only seller offering ANC slabs and his statement he bought them from someone else. However, giving him some of the benefit of the doubt, he may just be trying to save face if he indeed was the slabber and had a false impression of his grading capabilities.

Well the coin came from Florida, and ANC is in Oregon, so it's not an in-house grader.... they just suck.

Noxx, how did you learn that ANC is in Oregon? I noticed there's a URL on the reverse of the slab, but it's too indistinct to make it out. I couldn't find anything on a Google on "American Numismatic Company", so the website must have a different address.

Thanks, Noxx. The ANC website doesn't give much info. A little detective work and we find that the domain is registered in Florida (from WhoIs):

Let us know if this name or address sounds familiar (the Yahoo address is just the host). Also, if you still have it, the return address, postmark, and, if used, Delivery Confirmation or other on/offline USPS tracking info would be helpful. I suspect the Oregon address given on the website is just a blind or forwarding address used as a cover. If someone were to actually send something to the address, I would expect it to be forwarded to Florida and, vice versa, the OR address could be used for shipping.

Given this new information, my suspicions are raised even more.

USPS tracking only shows the package from Tampa FL, to my adress, without the originating addie. The return address on the package is in Tampa as well, but doesn't match the address you dug up. Very shady, methinks. Good sleuthing there.

If an alphabet grading company (I refuse to call most of them "service") has a website, here's the URL to track down their domain registration.

http://www.directnic.com/whois/

For as little as $6.95 per year (and probably a couple minor additional charges plus two Wheaties boxtops) you too can have your own domain! Noxx.com is already taken, but there's still Noxx.us and several others. http://www.directnic.com/whois/?query=noxx.com .

Fred,

Not only slabbers, but all the "investment letter" gurus are there too! I think Boca Ratan has a bunch of them. Must not be enough to do down there while they dodge hurricanes!

ANC is basicly a "slabs his own" operation, but they do supposedly accept outside submissions as well. They have been around for awhile, probably about a year and a half to two years, but they didn't have the website until recently. They have used three different slab designs.
