In hand it has a really strong all over silver/yellow coppery sheen.

Want me to send it to you to check it out yourself?

Possibly a bronze coated cent. Can you photgraph it by a normal cent. If it is it is an error of the planchet. Zinc planchets were left in the copper plating vat to long creating bronze plating. This happened in 83 and a couple other years as well. They do carry a premium if genuine. I think I recall @ $30 if it is a bronze coated LMC. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm O.K. brass plated. Sorry. WOLF

The other option is that it is a zinc planchet that did not stay in the plating vat long enough so has an ultra thin copper layer. I have a few of those in my collection but do not recall the years. WOLF

I'm sorry I don't have a way to take photos. Scanning is my only option. I'd lean more towards brass than bronze though because of the paleness and yellowishness. Its not a strong brassy look though, too pale.

When I first saw it without my glasses I thought it was a dime someone stuck in a cent roll ;)

Whatever it is, I honestly think it was minted this way.

Maybe it is a case of too thin plating. Hard or me to say or guess.

Ok, I scanned a normal colored 1991 (couldn't find another 1991 D) beside the pale 1991. Sorry I can't take a real photo ARGH!! and scanning is all I can do at this point. I hope you can see some of the degree of difference in color. I sure wish you could all see the silver sheen especially on the pale one.

A Zincoln exposed to acid will exhibit this type of discoloring. I have put an LMC is vinegar water and it came out looking like yours.

It's not corroded at all though. Smooth and shines. Wouldn't the surface texture be rough and dull/flat/matte if eroded by acid?

Not if the vinegar water solution is mild enough. The discoloration process doesn't take very long. If it was soaked for an hour, the coin would discolor and still retain its luster.
Rest in Peace

Nothing wrong with scans. Use Irfanview to adjust the colors, contrast, brightness and gamma so that what is on the scrren matches what is in hand.

I see a difference, but the Philly coin doesn't look normal color, so it doesn't provide much to work with.

Interesting. I sure wish I could show you folks a real photo.

I should test out a coin just to see what the end results look like for myself.

What kind of mixtures and what measurements would I use? I'm thinking you might mean just vinegar and water?

Yes, I meant just distilled white vinegar and water. I didn't really measure either component, but I would say the ratio was approximately 20:1 (water:vinegar). I don't recommend trying this on anything you want to save. The outcome was obvious and hideous (IMO) and I'll never do it again.

I don't have Irfanview. Just my HP F2110 scanner. And Paint. I'll have to look more to see if I have another 1991 D around here then I'll play with different contrast and bright settings, see what I can come up with.
